Our People, Our Communities
Here are just some of the ways Reliance staff members have been making a difference in Hampton Roads:
Nancy Grizzard of our Newport News and Suffolk offices volunteered with Hope and Happiness, an organization that provides recreational and social opportunities for the special needs population, last month and helped with the group's Winter Snow Ball dance.
Our Suffolk client Safco donated office furniture and supplies to the Isle of Wight County Schools, Isle of Wight County Parks and Recreation, and Christian Outreach last month. Safco also donated canned food to Christian Outreach. Nancy Simonelli of our Virginia Beach office, and her fellow members of the Kiwanis Club of Lynnhaven, with help from the Princess Anne High School Key Club, made 55 stuffed dolls for the children at St. Mary's Infant Home in Virginia Beach. This is an ongoing project that the members do yearly; the dolls are distributed to children living at other facilities such as Lake Taylor Transitional Hospital and CHKD. |

Valentine's Day is long gone, but the stories in this month's newsletter still focus on the heart. Over on the Reliance blog, we've been talking about bringing your heart to work (for the holiday itself), and we've also been talking about how to take care of your heart by reducing stress for yourself and your employees. We've talked about an aspect of management that most of us approach with a heavy heart: dealing with difficult employees. And how to make sure you hire people who have your firm's best interests at heart. We hope these articles make your job as a business leader easier. If you'd like to make that job easier still, contact Reliance and learn how we can improve your business's bottom line.

Bring Your Heart to Work
You might not think that love has much to do with work and business, unless your industry makes cards or chocolates. But there's a lot to be said for applying the concept of love to all you do, including the work you get paid for. One of the classic parables of management involves three stonecutters being asked about their jobs. The first one replied, "I'm paid to cut stones." The second replied, "I use special techniques to shape stones in an exceptional way; here, let me show you." The third just smiled and said, "I build cathedrals." That smile on the last one's face? That's bringing love to one's work.

Help Your People, Help Your Profits: Fighting Stress at Work
Few people, except maybe the masochistic or pathologically macho, enjoy stress, but some may believe that stress is necessary, even beneficial, to a company's success. Well, recent research published by the Gallup Press shows that stress isn't just unhealthy for individual workers, it's unhealthy for a company's finances.

Show Stress Who's the Boss (Even If You're Not a Boss)
There are several approaches managers can take to help their employees manage stress on the job. But what if you're one of not one of these managers' employees? (Or you're a manager dealing with a lot of stress yourself?) Are there any tactics you can use to reduce, manage or otherwise tame the stress you feel? Absolutely. No matter where you fit on the company org chart, you can manage yourself to reduce your stress.

Dealing with Difficult Employees
It may seem like some employees have their "difficult" status tattooed on their foreheads: whining, martyring, negativity, even open hostility. But sometimes otherwise great employees can go through a difficult spell, especially if they're under a lot of stress on and/or off the job. In dealing with difficult employees, it's best to try to separate your feelings about the person from the more objective impact their behavior is having on the work environment.

Hiring Trustworthy Employees: The Economics of Ethics
When you're looking to hire new people, the bottom line is one of your main concerns. You want to get the most qualified people you can at the best price in a timely manner. So it might seem like ethics are a "nice to have" rather than a "have to have." But focusing on your potential hires' ethics can save your business money in the long run.
