January is usually a month of preparation. Every year at this time, businesses prepare their year-end financial and tax records, while human resources departments make sure their records and posters are up-to-date in preparation for the rest of the year.

This year requires a little extra preparation, because of the fallout from the Great Recession and its high levels of unemployment. One aspect of that fallout is the higher unemployment insurance costs Virginia businesses will have to bear. Another is the trend that workers who wouldn't think of leaving their jobs last year are now considering it in surprisingly large numbers.

We're here to help you prepare for the changes to your workforce that might come in 2011, and we've added a new tool to help you get the most qualified workers possible. Together, we can make this new year great.

Weathering the Continuing Storm
of Unemployment

NewspaperFirst of all, happy 2011! Now, let's talk unemployment. Specifically, unemployment costs in Virginia.

The continuing high rates of unemployment have strained most states' funds, and Virginia is no exception. Virginia's unemployment rate is lower than the national rate by a good 3 percentage points (6.8% vs. 9.8%), but it has one of the lowest taxable wage bases in the nation, so there's a smaller pool for the statewide fund to draw from. Who's going to have to make up the difference? Unfortunately, Virginia businesses are.

Reliance Guarantees a Legal, Authorized Workforce with E-Verify

E-Verify picOn January 1st, Reliance joined about a quarter of a million businesses across the nation in using E-Verify to make sure all our employed associates are authorized to work in the U.S.

E-Verify is an online system that compares an employee's I-9 to data from the Department of Homeland Security and the Social Security Administration to confirm the employee's employment eligibility.
Are Your Employees Preparing to Leave?

Employee leavingIn one of the typical ironies of business prognosticating, even as the unemployment rate is still high (and even increasing in Hampton Roads), analysts are looking to the future and seeing... a lot of people planning to leave their jobs.

A recent survey by Right Management of 1,400 workers in the United States revealed that 84 percent of them "intend to actively seek a new position" in 2011. Another 11 percent were considering a job change, which means only 5 percent of the people surveyed intended to stay in their current position.
