Our People,
Our Communities

Reliance staff members have been active in Hampton Roads. Here are a few examples:

Nancy Grizzard of our Newport News office co-hosted a dance for the Suffolk organization Hope and Happiness, a local charity for mentally and physically challenged young adults to build friendships.

As a member of Blue Star Moms of Hampton Roads, Alise Baldwin of our Newport News office helped to raise funds to send Christmas care packages to troops deployed overseas.

Nancy Simonelli of our Virginia Beach office will participate in the Kiwanis fundraiser for Kids Priority One on Dec. 23rd (www.kidspriorityone.org). Kids Priority One connects families and children in need with resources available throughout Hampton Roads in partnership with YMCA of South Hampton Roads.

Stephanie Lamb of our Suffolk office has adopted a family for Christmas, helping them out with gifts and food, in conjunction with Open Door Church in Suffolk.

While the holidays are often fun around the office, they can also be  hotspots for misunderstandings and potential conflicts. This month, we're discussing two major minefields: the holiday party and the holiday bonus. We've got suggestions for avoiding the missteps and getting the most out of your firm's holiday traditions.

We've also begun showcasing the involvement our people have in the Hampton Roads community. Just underneath our current job openings in the left-hand column, you can find several examples of the ways Reliance team members are making a difference in our communities.

As the holidays approach, we'd like to thank you for another wonderful year, and we look forward to helping your business grow in 2011. Happy holidays!

Celebrate Smart: Avoid Office Party Fouls

Holiday party foulThe majority of American businesses are planning to throw some kind of holiday celebration this year (either 76 or 79 percent, depending on which recent survey you read). But those festivities can have some unexpected fallout: according to Fisher & Phillips LLC, 36 percent of companies that gave a holiday party reported some kind of behavioral problems associated with the event.

Does this mean you should nix your celebration? Absolutely not! Just follow some guidelines for reducing potential office party fouls:

Holiday Bonuses: What, Why, How

Holiday bonus moneyNot only are more businesses giving holiday parties this year than last, they're also giving more gifts in the form of bonuses, according to a recent CareerBuilder survey. A full third (33 percent) of employers plan to give their employees holiday bonuses this year, up from 29 percent in 2009. Google recently made headlines by giving all its employees a $1,000 bonus (in addition to a 10% raise) for the holidays.

If you're considering giving a bonus this holiday season, here are some tips for playing Santa:

Relying on Reliance: SAFCO Products Distribution Center

Safco logoIn late 2008, Safco built a 302,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art distribution center in Windsor. The center accommodates 30,000 pallet locations and houses Safco's full line of 48-hour Quick-Ship products, extending Safco's reach and responsiveness.

Safco's regional distribution manager, Scott Bauer, remembers the company's first interactions with Reliance Staffing. "We were building this building in Windsor, and Reliance contacted us in Minnesota," he says. Safco is headquartered in New Hope, Minnesota.

"By that point, we'd done a job fair and had hired some people, and some of them didn't really work out. So we started to work with Reliance. That was two years ago-two years ago this month, in fact."
