To Engage Employees, Ask the Right Questions

Surveys can help you gauge employee engagement and find areas for improvement. To encourage honest feedback, consider making the survey anonymous. Also, consider asking open-ended questions to remove any bias and allow more useful answers.

As the economy continues to recover, more temporary workers are being called upon to fill the needs of gradually growing demand. Temporary workers are playing a larger role in many companies' contingent workforce plans, and while their status is different than their permanent coworkers, their sense of involvement and investment in the company can be just as beneficial to the bottom line.

In this issue, we explore employee engagement and how it applies to your staffing approaches. The growth in the use of temporary workers is significant this quarter, and we'll look at its relationship to GDP. We'll also examine how to engage with potential employees through social media, and how to frame survey questions to measure employee engagement within the workplace.

Boost in Temporary Hires Could Signal Strong Recovery

By Tom Sarach, Jr.

It's also good news for Hampton Roads businesses, because it means overall demand will probably increase as the GDP rebounds.

What Potential Employees Want to See from Your Social Media--And What They Don't
by Catherine Cantieri

More and more companies are using social media for business. A recent CareerBuilder survey showed that, on average, 35% of employers use social media to promote their companies. Of those companies, 21% report using social media to recruit and research potential employees.
Employee Engagement-For All Employees

One of the smartest HR investments a company can make is in employee engagement. Research from Hay Group consulting has shown that engaged employees can boost a company's revenue growth by up to two and a half times. However, employee engagement has several potential pitfalls, one of which is that it's not always applied to contingent workers.

Excluding temporary and contingent workers from employee engagement measures is, essentially, leaving potential revenue on the table. While companies might be reluctant to expend resources on non-permanent employees, many employee engagement tactics are low- or no-cost, and can apply to all members of the workforce.
