Hampton Roads continues to be a hotbed of activity; it keeps us all on our toes. There are many questions that just may be answered by the first quarter of 2011. Is JFCOM expendable in an era of complex military operations worldwide? Will The Tide light rail, which runs from Newtown Road through downtown Norfolk to the Eastern Virginia Medical Center, open in May? What will happen with Virginia's suit against the U.S. government which states it's unconstitutional to require Americans to purchase a product (health insurance)? This certainly affects Hampton Roads and our business community. Our region has a lot going on, which is so much better than the alternative, nothing happening at all. I love being a Hampton Roads resident.

When Will Businesses Start Hiring Again?
By Tom Sarach, Jr.
"When will businesses start hiring again?" is a question on the forefront of nearly everyone's mind these days as, let's face it, everyone's life is deeply affected by the uncertainty surrounding the economy. From my vantage point, as the long-time president of a staffing firm and as the founder of a software company, the real question is, "When will businesses feel SAFE enough to hire again?" Through formal and informal discussions -- in my congressman and senators' offices as well as in my clients' conference rooms and offices -- the collective answer couldn't be more clear: Continue --> |

Effectively Coaching Employees: Tips for Managers and Supervisors
by Stephanie Lamb, CSP
Branch Manager, Reliance Staffing Suffolk
Coaching is on-the-job training which allows managers to work directly with employees to teach or improve job-related skills. Effective coaching will benefit employees and in turn their employer. Some of the benefits that result from proper coaching include developing effective work skills, providing greater profit for business, giving better service to customers, improving communication throughout the workforce and achieving corporate goals.
Coaching is needed when an employee's actual job performance does not meet expected job performance. Coaching should be used when there is a specific skill-related problem that is simple enough to correct on the job. It is important to remember that a manager's most important function is to ensure effective subordinate performance, and coaching is an effective method used to "teach" others effective performance skills.

What Not to Ask
by Jennifer Wehrmann
Placement Specialist,
Reliance Staffing Suffolk
Various federal, state, and local laws regulate the questions a prospective employer can ask a potential employee during an interview. Protect yourself and your company by avoiding questions that pertain to nationality, age, marital/family status, health/physical abilities, gender, and religion. Read on for examples of questions you cannot ask during an interview and suggestions for what can be asked instead: Nationality: Illegal: Are you a US citizen? Where were you born? What is your "native tongue?" Legal: Are you authorized to work in the United States? Which languages do you speak, read and write fluently? Age: Illegal: How old are you? When did you graduate from college? Legal: Are you over the age of 18? What are your long-term career goals? Marital/Family Status:Illegal: Are you married? Do you have or plan to have children? Can you get a babysitter on short notice for overtime or travel?
