Swine Flu: A New Type of Threat Facing Employers
By BLR Founder and CEO Bob Brady
There's been no shortage of bad news for employers lately-the economy, EFCA, you name it. Now it appears that we're facing a threat of a different sort: Swine flu. Just what we need-another "pandemic." Is it hysteria or a real threat? As of 11 a.m. Thursday, April 30, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) were reporting 109 cases in the U.S., and the first U.S. swine flu-related death (in Texas). The numbers have undoubtedly gone up since then. The World Health Organization had raised the alert level to Phase 5, just one level beneath a full-blown pandemic.
Properly implemented, your pandemic plan can help limit the flu's impact on employee health--and the economic health of your organization. Join us for a comprehensive audio conference on May 11th, and find out what you need to know.
Just how serious is this? Could it be something like the epidemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 50 million people?

Harkin Looks For Ways To Rewrite Card Check For Specter
Tuesday, May 5, 2009 by Kasie Hunt Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter's switch to the Democratic Party will give the Employee Free Choice Act new life -- if it's rewritten in Specter's image.
Specter has said he will still support a Republican filibuster of the legislation. But Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who is spearheading Senate Democrats' push to pass the bill, said he is using the changes Specter has proposed as a blueprint for a potential compromise. "We're hoping to put something together. It may be something labor may not like," he said. He said the process would have three steps: first, writing a bill that could garner 60 votes to overcome a Republican filibuster; second, making sure it had some support from organized labor; and third, if possible, bringing the business community on board.
"There are businesses that may support something," Harkin said, mentioning the coalition of Starbucks, Whole Foods and Costco that created the Committee for a Level Playing Field and announced support for a possible compromise effort in March.
"Sen. Specter engaging on those two makes it definitely more real. His party switch has breathed new life into EFCA or EFCA compromises," a business lobbyist working to oppose EFCA said. "He's going to drive this."
