In 1979, while in graduate school earning an MFA in sculpture, Cynthia Thompson decided her art would not be shown in galleries, for the few, but in public places, for the many. She started making environmental artistic fabric installations and performance art. With a partner, she co-founded the performance art troupe PINK INC in 1980. After earning her MFA from the Museum School, Boston, she moved to Tempe, Arizona to teach Installation Art and Performance Art at Arizona State. There she collaborated with Bill Moss, inventor of the pop-tent, and grandfather of tension fabric art. Bill suggested to Cindy that she might find artistic freedom and fulfillment in the world of business, an idea which at first she rejected outright, but upon reflection, decided to explore. We trace Transformit's origin to that decision: to create art for the many. When Cindy introduced tension fabric to the world of special events, it created a stir, and imitators soon followed her. Transformit is still owned and led by its founder, and remains an innovator and leader in the world of fabric. Like a seasoned band of musicians, we can be counted on for a solid performance. We invite you to meet us and see our current work at two upcoming trade shows:
