Sentries Keep Watch at Wings Performing Arts Center Pro Bono Installation Debuts at Opening Gala Celebration
Our April 8 newsletter featured a temporary installation at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi. Now, here is a permanent installation in the same town!
Sentries, Wings Performing Arts Center, Gulfport, MS (permanent installation) Design + Installation: Cynthia Thompson + Transformit
This simple, elegant installation graces the entry foyer of the Wings Performing Arts Center at the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center. The center was built to house the Wings Performing Arts Program, which puts on a variety of youth-oriented and youth-performed programs in theater, dance and music. In addition, the center provides mentoring for students, and in 2008, fourteen seniors received over one million dollars in college scholarships. Speakers at the new building's ribbon-cutting ceremony included the Governor of Mississippi, Haley Barbour, and Senator Billy Hewes. The event was sponsored and catered by renowned chef Emeril Lagasse.

Sensitive installation is essential to the art of these simple pieces.
When stretched, Sentry takes on a shape in which the fabric
automatically distributes the stretching forces in the most efficient
way. The name for such an ideal shape is hyperbolic paraboloid. In the
industry, we shorten it to hypar. The installation is by long-time Transformit installer Cheryl Cayer, who is herself an artist.

Dreamsicle at Morgan State's Soper Library Technical Art Channels Light into Halls of Learning
When Design Collective chose Transformit's Dreamsicle for the new Soper Library's interior lightwell, the idea was to inspire students with art. An unexpected benefit was the piece's ability to bring light from the upper clerestory windows into the lower floors of the library!

The new Morris A.Soper Library at Morgan State University was named Best Higher Education Project in McGraw-Hill Construction's "Best of the Best Awards." We are honored to have been chosen for this project by this team!

Dreamsicle was designed in 2000 by Cynthia Thompson. Often used in temporary installations, the inner "double funnel" is typically lit from above and below with color-changing LEDs, giving a lava-light effect on a grand scale. Here, the piece's installation is more neutral, but it still effectively transmits light through the building at all times of day.

Senior Lounge Glows with Lighting Element DiMella Shaffer Architects specified this backlit element for Fox Hill Senior Condominium. Transformit fabricated and installed the piece for contractor, Manganaro Midatlantic.
Lighting Element, Sunrise at Fox Hill, Bethesda, MD (permanent installation) Design: DiMella Shaffer Fabrication and Installation: Transformit
Tranformit's fabrication and installation were especially appreciated when the perimeter valance was eliminated from the project, leaving the outboard edges of the lighting element's eight panels visible. Had the fabrication or installation been less precise, any flaws would have been glaringly evident!

Note the precise panel alignment in the photo above. The photo below shows both the fabric lighting element, below, and the similar glass-based lighting element in the lounge, above.
