Fleetwood partners with Transformit at GlobalShop Transformit and Fleetwood Fixtures together have designed a sign to be suspended over Fleetwood's Fixture Park exhibit. As you might expect, it won't be like any "hanging sign" you've seen! If you'll be in Las Vegas for GlobalShop or for Exhibitor, we invite you to take a look at #4023, and/ or arrange a meeting with us in Las Vegas. Our thanks to Dazian for fabric and Portland Color for printing.

 Mulvanny G2 Office Installation
We recently completed this permanent installation at the Irvine, CA office of Mulvanny G2 Architecture. The piece represents clouds floating over the office's "town square", or caf area. As you can see from the wide-angle photo, the design constraints of the installation were tight: standard office ceiling height, with only 16" of depth for the piece below the color-changing LED lights. Programming for the lights is controlled by the client architect, and the lighting mood is changeable according to the time of day, or for any event taking place in the "square".

Thoughts on Color by Cindy Thompson, MFA, with Hilary Howes When I was a student at Colorado State, my sculpture teacher, John
Berlin, told me not to color my work. He said, "Sculpture is about
form." But it was 1968 and I was unruly, so I spent hours
experimenting (successfully!) with turquoise and purple patinas for
bronze. John shook his head and said, "Well, I guess you just had to
do it." Later, during my grad school work developing fabric sculpture, color was still as important to me as form. At
Transformit, it still is!
Installation Sketch, Cynthia Thompson
What's exciting about Spring (for those of us who live
where the seasons change) is the explosion of color. The use of color is one of
the most powerfully emotional techniques available to designers and artists. Some use color
in a thoughtful, analytical way, while others use it intuitively. Amidst all the
information about color management, color trends, and
about how color is used in religion, politics, safety, wardrobe, homes
and brands, it is important to remember that color is
personal, and soulful. The art of color is when you go beyond looking at
it as a tool, or as means to an end. The art of color is using it with soulful intent, without calculation. As in: red will be Red, blue will be Blue, and yellow will be Yellow. All of this makes using
color glorious!

If you'd like to know what other professionals are thinking about color,
a useful resource is the Color Marketing Group, of which our own Hilary
Howes is a member. Color Marketing Group chapters meet regularly
to share design intelligence, and to make and confirm color forecasts.
Hilary writes, "For 2009, the biggest story is the economy, but also
the maturing of the sustainability movement." What does that mean for
color and design trends? "Faced with an uncertain economy, people look
to the safety and security of black and white. Shades of grey are also
reassuring, and we are seeing them maintain strict neutrality this
year. Comforting, classic and honest, the clean designs of black, white
and grey often have an accent color to push the theme one way or
another. The maturing environmental movement is looking past green to
the yellows of sunshine and the blues of pure water as the most
important colors in the new year. The sunny yellow that is popular this
year is also a cheery and optimistic color that lifts spirits in a down
economy. Likewise, the blues that will predominate this year are not
somber like navy blue, but rather upbeat and energized sky blues." Even
if one pays attention to the trends, there is still freedom for
designers to choose between safety and optimism!
