August 11, 2011, Quick Update

from Florida Cultural Alliance

Two quick updates for you --

#1 for info &

#2 for quick-and-easy action:

#1 for info:  August 15 statewide advocacy call is cancelled.

Mark your calendars for our September 12 statewide call
from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. ET.   Special guest speaker
is the President of The Florida League of Cities Joy Cooper.

Her president's initiative this year is "Culture Builds Florida Communities."  The final report on this initiative is scheduled
for release this month; however, you can learn more about this initiative, the workshops, and the listed resources here.

#2 for Quick Action:  Has your U.S. Representative heard
from you about how he or she voted on the National Endowment on the Arts (NEA)?

If not, take quick action here -- will take you two minutes.

We're thankful the additional cut to the NEA was defeated by
a vote of 181-240 on July 28 in the U.S. House.  Details and
how Florida's U.S. Representatives voted are below
(11 voted against cut; 13 voted for it; 1 did not vote).

Do you want additional details about this issue?

The Walberg Amendment was defeated on the U.S. House floor on July 28 by a vote of 181-240.

Your e-mails and telephone calls made a difference.

If the Walberg Amendment had passed, the House would have added an additional $10.6-million cut to the $20-million reduction already in the House bill for the NEA for FY 2012.  The NEA has gone from $167.5 million last year, to $155 million this year; and now, the U.S. House recommends $135 million for FY 2012.
