Thank you to all of you who took the time to vote in the Cobb-Hall "Change for Livingston" contest via facebook.
WE WON! The Howell Teen Center chalked up the most "like" votes and we are so proud.
On August 9, we will be attending the "Summer in the City" afternoon celebration on the patio outside of Cobb-Hall Insurance and accepting our cash award. There is still time to contribute your change into the fountain outside of Cobb-Hall, so before next Tuesday, head over there and throw in your change - don't forget to make a wish too.
A very special thank you to our Enrichment Director, Beth Schrader...she pushed and pushed and pushed and WE WON!

Senior Power Day is a huge event held August 5th from 9am to 3pm at Brighton High School where elected officials, local businesses, and seniors from around the county come together for good food, entertainment, and an exhibition hall full of information booths geared toward the needs of seniors. Come and mingle with other seniors and receive important information relating to senior citizens of Livingston County. Lunch will be available for $3 for seniors ($5 for non-seniors) and will be collected at the door on the day of the event. Please pre-register for transportation and/or a meal by calling 517/ 546-0693 ext. 0 or stop by the Senior Desk. Transportation will be provided by L.E.T.S. The theme for this year's Senior Power is a Mexican Fiesta! "Ole!" |

Belly Dancing for Beginners |

Come learn the basic foundation for bellydance movements that are broken down into simple steps. Focus is on muscle isolation. You will learn to control and develop all major muscle groups with extra attention paid to your core muscles. Please wear comfortable clothing to class, and bring water. Class is taught by Shetan Noir, an award winning bellydancer who performs all over Michigan. You will learn movement such as hip figure 8's, stomach rolls, shimmies, snake arms, and traveling steps. Classes are each Monday from August 8th - 29th at the Barnard Community Center from 6pm-7pm.

Trek Women's Triathlon |

The Trek Women Triathlon is coming to Howell on August 7! This event is held at Thompson Lake and Page Field. This triathlon consists of a 1/2 mile swim, a 12 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run. Cycle Howell |

Cycle Howell is a riding club that promotes bike riding as a way to get folks out-of-doors to enjoy good exercise, fresh air and camaraderie while touring the local neighborhoods, parks, and countryside from May through October. This is not a competitive riding group, rather a group of individuals of various ages and abilities that come together to enjoy group cycling primarily in the Howell area. Established Saturday morning 10-mile bike rides that take riders through many of the city parks will start and end at the Bennett Recreation Center .
The next scheduled ride takes place Saturday, August 6th at 9:00am.
And don't forget to sign up today for the Doc May Commemorative Bike Ride during Melon Festival on Saturday, August 20th at 9 a.m. (additional cost of $15 pre-registered/$20 day of the ride.) Great T-shirt when you register.
To participate in Cycle Howell rides you must sign up for a Cycle Howell membership. Individual memberships cost $20 per person. Family memberships are $50 per family, and a one-time ride is $5.

What's Up With Amateur Astronomy |

The emphasis is on enjoyment as we help beginners experience the wonders of the night sky. Some time will be devoted to actual observation using just our eyes, binoculars and a good amateur telescope (Weather permitting). Students needing help with their own scopes are welcome to bring them along, but no personal equipment is required. Students should dress in layers in case we get an opportunity to observe outside.
Class takes place Wednesday, August 17 through Wednesday, August 31 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Barnard Community Center. Cost is $20 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $28 for Genoa and Marion Township residents, and $40 for non-residents.

Join members of the Howell Senior Center on Monday, August 22nd at 11am to have lunch at Boomtown Kitchen in Brighton for their Half-Off Burger Day! Then we can do some shopping at J.C. Penny's and other stores at Green Oak Mall. This should be a fun day, so plan on attending. The cost of lunch is not included in the price of the trip. Transportation will be provided.  | eBay: The Basics and Beyond the Basics |

The Basics of Selling on eBay course is for newbies or those with little eBay selling experience. The course guides students through the process of creating an eBay seller's account and shows students how to create an effective eBay listing. Students learn to create listing titles and descriptions, how to produce quality photos and how to determine the market price for items students are selling or buying. A $20 material fee is due to instructor at the beginning of class for manual and CD.

If you have some experience selling on eBay and want to take it to the next level, you will want to attend the Beyond the Basics: Building your Business on eBay class. This advanced class will cover the keys to success on eBay, starting a business on eBay, what to sell and where to find it. Develop a business strategy, pricing and format options. Learn how to market your business on and off eBay. Also learn what to do after the sale (managing payments, shipping etc.) The course cost includes a materials fee of $20, which includes an eBay-issued Student Manual and exclusive Student Resources CD-Rom. Receive a course completion certification from eBay.

Enroll your child today in one of these active, high energy classes which offer positive parent-child experiences and a love of learning. Your child will enjoy music, art, dramatic play, storytelling and much, much more! Each class is prepared to be a quality learning experience. Children will investigate the world around them using hands on activities as well as field trips and community visitors. Our program is well established and our teachers are certified with over 11 years experience.
Our programs are based on the belief that children learn through their interaction with adults, other children and their environment. Supportive interactions lead the child to a positive self-image that will provide a sound basis for all subsequent learning. Our programs focus on the whole child. They are designed to enhance social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative growth. We emphasize the importance of working cooperatively with parents to achieve this goal.

Preschool begins the week of September 12, 2011 and follows closely the Howell Public Schools holiday and inclement weather closings. The last day of school will be May 24, 2012.

Join the community tradition of the 34th Annual Melon Run on August 19. This is one of the most scenic and beautiful run/walks through residential streets, historic Lakeview Cemetery, and Howell City Park. And new in 2011, we have certified our race distances for both the 5K and the 10K. The race starts and finishes in Downtown Howell. Onsite registrations, post race awards, and refreshments (like melon ice cream) will all take place on State Street. Bring the whole family to enjoy all the special events including the Melon Roll, 1/4 mile Tot Trot, Melon Dash, One Mile Fun Run/Walk, 5K and 10K. Parking is available at the Barnard Community Center and on residential streets surrounding Downtown. Early entry fee deadline is midnight on 8/18. Mailed applications must be postmarked by 8/15. Please indicate t-shirt size during registration. T-shirt not guaranteed on late registration. A security area will be provided for all runners during race.

With the Howell Parks and Recreation Authority expanded facilities we are offering leagues on Saturday's for people who aren't available to participate in our traditional week day leagues. These leagues will be still be 8 weeks. League will consist of 3 practices times at 1 and a half hours and 5 games. This program is designed to teach young players the game of soccer. Your child will become more familiar with skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving and more. Practices and games will be played on weekday evenings. Random placement determines all teams. Teams are co-ed. Volunteer coaches are needed for this league. Coaches will receive a voucher for helping coach. Deadline to register is July 30. A $10.00 late fee will be added to any registration after this date.
Weekday League costs $49 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $68 for Marion Township and Genoa Township residents, and $98 for non-residents. The Saturday League costs $38 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $53 for Marion and Genoa Township residents, and $76 for non-residents.

The Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort is a casino, hotel and entertainment venue owned and operated by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, located just outside of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. It is considered to be the largest casino in the Midwest. The casino offers a typical selection of pit and table games such as blackjack, baccarat, roulette, craps, 3 card poker and Let It Ride with betting limits ranging from $5-$1000. In addition to slot machines in the main casino, there is an additional nearby gaming hall called the "Slot Palace" where Bingo and Keno are offered. The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority was formed in 2006 and serves residents in the City of Howell, Oceola Township, Genoa Township and Marion Township. Our mission is to bring communities together to enrich lives by promoting active and healthy lifestyles. Public meetings are held every other month on the third Tuesday at the Bennett Recreation Center at 7pm.
