August is one of our favorite months of the year here at the Howell Parks and Recreation as it is the month when our biggest race takes place in downtown Howell.  And we hope you'll be there to participate or at the very least to cheer on your favorite runners. The 34th Annual Howell Melon Run is on the schedule for Friday evening, August 19 with our series of races beginning at 6 p.m.  We are very excited to inform those that are participating that we've taken the initiative this year to have our race certified.  The distances of the 5K and the 10K race routes will be exact and we are excited to offer this as one of hte premier races in Michigan.  Come and join us for a great evening.  Sign up today.

Hunter Safety

 

deerGet your Hunter Safety certificate before small game and deer season starts! This course is DNR approved and provides basic hunting safety material. A certificate will be given upon completion of the assisted 50 questions exam. All students must attend all four classes to receive certificate. Air riffle range test will be given on the last day of class. Adults welcome to attend. Class size is limited. (Students under 11 years of age must be accompanied by an adult).

 

Class takes place Monday, August 1st through Thursday, August 4th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at Marion Township Hall. Class costs $10 per person.

Movies Under the Stars


  

 

Despicable MeWatch your favorite movies under the stars on the big inflatable outdoor screen at Howell City Park this Friday, July 29! Bring your sleeping bags, lawn chairs, or favorite  blanket. Each night will include your fun activities prior to showing the movie. So tell your neighbors and friends not to miss out on the fun!  

 

Movies start at dusk (typically around 9:30pm). If the weather is uncooperative, shows will be canceled and will not be rescheduled. There will be a chance to win a framed large theatrical movie poster of that evenings showing. Concessions will be available.

 

The next movie is "Despicable Me" and will be shown on Friday, July 29th.

Trek Women's Triathlon

The Trek Women Triathlon is coming to Howell on August 7! This event is held at Thompson Lake and Page Field. This triathlon consists of a 1/2 mile swim, a 12 mile bike ride, and a 3 mile run. Cycle Howell

Cycle Howell is a riding club that promotes bike riding as a way to get folks out-of-doors to enjoy good exercise, fresh air and camaraderie while touring the local neighborhoods, parks, and countryside from May through October. This is not a competitive riding group, rather a group of individuals of various ages and abilities that come together to enjoy group cycling primarily in the Howell area. Established Saturday morning 10-mile bike rides that take riders through many of the city parks will start and end at the Bennett Recreation Center .

 

The next scheduled ride takes place Saturday, August 6th at 9:00am. To participate you must sign up for a Cycle Howell membership. Individual memberships cost $20 per person. Family memberships are $50 per family, and a one-time ride is $5.

What's Up With Amateur Astronomy


 

 

 

starsThe emphasis is on enjoyment as we help beginners experience the wonders of the night sky. Some time will be devoted to actual observation using just our eyes, binoculars and a good amateur telescope (Weather permitting). Students needing help with their own scopes are welcome to bring them along, but no personal equipment is required. Students should dress in layers in case we get an opportunity to observe outside.  

 

Class takes place Wednesday, August 17 through Wednesday, August 31 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Barnard Community Center. Cost is $20 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $28 for Genoa and Marion Township residents, and $40 for non-residents.

Make Your Own Sock Puppet


 

 

 

Sock PuppetSock puppets are popular on children's television shows and in classrooms. The children will have a toy that will entertain them for hours. Class includes a snack and a sock puppet to take home.

 

Class takes place August 6th from 10:00am to 11:00am at Razzmatazz Toys in Howell. Class costs $14 for City of Howell and Oceola Township Residents, $20 for Genoa and Marion Township residents, and $28 for non-residents.

Gymnastics Classes

gymnasticClass is held at High Flyers, a well-established gym that has been in business for over 23 years. Lesson plans specific for each skill level have been fine tuned to teach children correct form and technique in a logical progression of skills. This is important so that kids can feel successful and build their self-confidence. High Flyers is owned and operated by Nancy Hanes and Nancy Gregory. Both are teachers, nationally recognized coaches, and are nationally certified as gymnastics coaches at the highest level. They take great care in hiring staff that care as much about the kids they coach as they do about gymnastics. High Flyers is also home to the Brighton, Howell, and Hartland competitive High School teams who qualify         annually to state championships, is chair to AAU Michigan District Gymnastics and has qualified gymnasts to compete at the AAU National Gymnastics meet of the AAU Junior Olympic Games every year since 1989.

 

Classes cost $92 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $129 for Genoa and Marion Township residents, and $184 for non-residents. Classes are held at High Flyers Gymnastics, located at 2244 Euler Road, Suite 104 in Genoa Township.

Your child will enjoy music, art, dramatic play, storytelling and much, much more! Each class is prepared to be a quality learning experience. Children will investigate the world around them using hands on activities as well as field trips and community visitors. Our program is well established and our teachers are certified with over 11 years experience.

 

Our programs are based on the belief that children learn through their interaction with adults, other children and their environment.  Supportive interactions lead the child to a positive self-image that will provide a sound basis for all subsequent learning. Our programs focus on the whole child. They are designed to enhance social, emotional,  cognitive, physical and creative growth. We emphasize the importance of working cooperatively with parents to achieve this goal.

Xbox 360 3D Game Design

 Learn to make games for the XBox 360. Kids will make a 3D game like asteroids, a flight simulator or car racing game. The design tool is (C# using Visual C# Express) uses typed commands. Students will learn the game development cycle from beginning to end. The games can be played on a computer or XBox 360.

 

Class is held Monday thru Friday, August 1st-August 5th from 9:00am-3:00pm at the Barnard Community Center. Cost is $400 for City of Howell, Oceola Township, Marion Township, and Genoa Township and $450 for non-residents.

34th Annual Howell Melon Run
 

 

melonlogoJoin the community tradition of the 34th Annual Melon Run on August 19. This is one of the most scenic and beautiful run/walks through residential streets, historic Lakeview Cemetery, and Howell City Park. And new in 2011, we have certified our race distances for both the 5K and the 10K.  The race starts and finishes in Downtown Howell. Onsite registrations, post race awards, and refreshments (like melon ice cream) will all take place on State Street. Bring the whole family to enjoy all the special events including the Melon Roll, 1/4 mile Tot Trot, Melon Dash, One Mile Fun Run/Walk, 5K and 10K. Parking is available at the Barnard Community Center and on residential streets surrounding Downtown. Early entry fee deadline is midnight on 8/18. Mailed applications must be postmarked by 8/15. Please indicate t-shirt size during registration.   T-shirt not guaranteed on late registration. A security area will be provided for all runners during race.

Senior Power Day
 

Senior Power Day is a huge event held August 5th from 9am to 3pm at Brighton High School where elected officials, local businesses, and seniors from around the county come together for good food, entertainment, and an exhibition hall full of information booths geared toward the needs of seniors. Come and mingle with other seniors and receive important information relating to senior citizens of Livingston County. Lunch will be available for $3 for seniors ($5 for non-seniors) and will be collected at the door on the day of the event. Fall Soccer
 

 

soccer ball With the Howell Parks and Recreation Authority expanded facilities we are offering leagues on Saturday's for people who aren't available to participate in our traditional week day leagues. These leagues will be still be 8 weeks. League will consist of 3 practices times at 1 and a half hours and 5 games. This program is designed to teach young players the game of soccer. Your child will become more familiar with skills such as dribbling, passing, receiving and more. Practices and games will be played on weekday evenings. Random placement determines all teams. Teams are co-ed. Volunteer coaches are needed for this league. Coaches will receive a voucher for helping coach. Deadline to register is July 30. A $10.00 late fee will be added to any registration after this date.

 

Weekday League costs $49 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $68 for Marion Township and Genoa Township residents, and $98 for non-residents. The Saturday League costs $38 for City of Howell and Oceola Township residents, $53 for Marion and Genoa Township residents, and $76 for non-residents.

Paddleboarding"What's SUP" Intro to Stand Up Paddleboarding  

This is the fastest growing sport in the world. Soaring Eagle Casino
 

casinoThe Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort is a casino, hotel and entertainment venue owned and operated by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, located just outside of Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. It is considered to be the largest casino in the Midwest. The casino offers a typical selection of pit and table games such as blackjack, baccarat, roulette, craps, 3 card poker and Let It Ride with betting limits ranging from $5-$1000. In addition to slot machines in the main casino, there is an additional nearby gaming hall called the "Slot Palace" where Bingo and Keno are offered. Trip price includes: round trip transportation, bottled water, 4 hours gaming time, $20 in gaming and $5 for food. So grab your lucky charm and travel with us!

The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority was formed in 2006 and serves residents in the City of Howell, Oceola Township, Genoa Township and Marion Township.  Our mission is to bring communities together to enrich lives by promoting active and healthy lifestyles.  Public meetings are held every other month on the third Tuesday at the Bennett Recreation Center at 7pm.
