The Board of Trustees of the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority recently met and made some changes to their meeting schedule and where meetings would be held during the upcoming year.  We have decided to meet every other month on the dates listed below at 7 p.m. at the Bennett Recreation Center, 925 W. Grand River.  The public is always invited.

2011 Tour de Livingston Kick-Off

Join the Howell Rotary Club for an uplfting bicycle ride to kick-off the 2011 Tour de Livingston. Climb on your bike and meet us for a 7 a.m. ride on June 26th, 2011 at the Courthouse Lawn in Downtown Howell. Riders can take a short ride to the site or choose a 10 or 26-mile loop both beginning with breathtaking views of the early morning fly-in at the Michigan Challenge Balloonfest. What a great way to gear up for a summer of cycling in our beautiful county!

 There will be giveaways for the first 50 participants, snacks, and an opportunity to receive a special gift for registering for this year's big ride. There is no charge for this event so bring your friends and family who want to give a group ride a try!

9th Annual Howell Independence Day Aquathlon

The Howell Independence Aquathlon is a unique multi-sport event which includes a 2K run, 750M swim and a final 2K run. Run takes place thru the Howell City Park and beautiful Lakeview Cemetery; swim portion takes place in Thompson Lake off of Howell City Park. We also have a one mile Open Water Swim. Awards will be given to all finishers of the events. Come enjoy the beautiful Howell City Park at Thompson Lake and these unique events. The all inclusive price allows you to participate in both events or choose one. **Registrations taken on-line, by phone and in person before 7/1/2011, $30.00 ($10.00 rebate for USAT members) $35.00 day of event.**

 

Sunday, July 3, Check-in begins at 8:00am, Open Water begins at 9:00am, Aquathlon begins at 10:00am.

Canoeing on Thompson Lake

 

 


Discover the fun of canoeing on Thompson Lake this summer. We start with a brief lesson on how to successfully enter, exit and paddle a canoe. Next we will adventure out into the beautiful and scenic Thompson Lake and enjoy a short adventure. Each canoe will seat two people. We welcome families with children ages 10 and up. Daily park admission will be required unless participant has an annual park pass. At completion of the class, each participant will receive a discount coupon to canoe at Heavner Canoe Rental in Milford.

 

Class will be Saturday, July 23, 9:30am-12:30pm and held at Thompson Lake at Howell City Park.

 

Cost will be $25 for City of Howell and Oceola Township, $35 for Marion and Genoa Township, $50 for non-residents

Michigan Alliance FC Soccer Tryouts

The Michigan Alliance FC provides soccer leagues, camps, and teams for players in the greater Livingston County area. The soccer club plays on fields in Howell, Brighton, and Pinckney. Please visit www.michiganalliancefc.org for summer offerings and potential team placements for the 2011-12 season. Families with players between the ages of 7 and 9 can contact the developmental director at michiganorangesoccer@gmail.com for more information about select programs. Hope to see you on the fields!  

 

Boater Safety

This basic boating course is intended for boaters ages 12 and up. Because boating is often a family activity, all members of the family are encouraged to attend. Topics to be covered include: safe boating practices, state of Michigan legal requirements and regulations, boating skills, and terminology. This is a Department of Natural Resources approved course and satisfies the State of Michigan requirements for a Michigan Boater Safety Certificate.

 

Class will be Saturday, June 25, 9am to 4 pm and held at the Barnard Community Center.

 

Cost is $20 for City of Howell and Oceola Township, $28 for Genoa and Marion Township, and $40 for non-residents.

2011-2012 Senior Center Membership


 

 

 

It's that time of year again! Whether you're a returning member back for another year of quality programming or a new member interested in joining for the first time, now is the time to join the Howell Senior Center.

 

Members of the Howell Senior Center will enjoy a monthly newsletter, trip opportunities with lower travel costs, donated food products and baked goods, free participation in many activities including: arts & crafts, walking club, chair exercise, computer lab, organized games, and much more. Membership for the Howell Senior Center is available from July 1-June 30 each year.

Membership for the Howell Senior Center is not mandatory but it is recommended. We currently have over 300 members. Annual membership dues for the City of Howell, Oceola Township, Genoa Township, and Marion Township are $20. Annaul membership rates for non-residents is $300. All seniors over the age of 90 are FREE. Membership applications are available at the front office or at the check-in desk or by downloading a copy from our website to bring in with your payment.  

 

Tae Kwon Do

The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority is offering a number of Tae Kwon Do classes starting July 5th. Classes are held at Kil's Tae Kwon Do Center located at 6936 W. Grand River, Brighton, MI 48114.

Tae Kwon Do is the Korean martial art that uses a balanced mix of blocks, punches, and kicks. It is both a sport and an art that teaches self defense skills while building strong, fexible bodies, provides an excellent cardiovascular work out, assists with weight loss, and improves mental discipline, self control, and respect while increasing concentration and confidence. Tae Kwon Do is for everyone, not just the athletically elite. It helps to build a sound body and a sound mind and a sense of well being. Students learn to become more aware and alert yet relaxed while becoming increasingly fit and proficient at defending themselves. Workouts are a fun way to get in shapte and relieve stress.

Don't let the dog days of summer end without another chance to lace up your spikes and hit the diamond.  Karl Kling, former head coach at Concordia University and owner of Michigan Sports Academy-Livingston, and his staff will be looking forward to working with your son or daughter on the finer points of the game.This inlcudes: Hitting, defense and pitching.  Each child will learn the correct approach to hitting from holding the bat all the way through the keys of a solid swing. The session will be action filled as the kids will be constantly on the move with drills, instruction and games.This clinic is great for those who play at all levels or are just learning the game for the first time.  

 

Clinic will be Saturday, July 23, 9:00m-11:00am fror Grades 3-5 and

11:00am-1:00pm for Grades 6-8. And will be held

 

Cost is $30 for City of Howell and Oceola residents, $46 for Marion and Genoa Township residents, $60 for non-residents.

Come and enjoy this classic film starring Bette Davis and Anne Baxter. At an awards dinner, Eve Harrington the newest and brightest star on Broadway is being presented the Award for her breakout performance as Cora in Footsteps on the Ceiling. Theatre critic Addison DeWitt  observes the proceedings and, in a sardonic voiceover, recalls how Eve's star rose as quickly as it did.
