April 14, 2010

April is the time to celebrate Spring and recognize the importance of a healthy environment.   We are proud to support the 40th anniversary of "Earth Day" this year by joining the Howell High School Environmental Club in downtown Howell on Saturday, April 24th for the annual earth day celebration.

A variety of local groups will have informational booths and activities, and vendors will be selling Earth-friendly products.  The Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority will have a booth where we'll be handing out seedlings, seed packets and other goodies to those that stop by.

The great part about this event - it is totally free and very family oriented.  So make plans to join us from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. on April 24th on State Street and at the Livingston County Courthouse for this great event.

Thank you to Joanna Miller, the advisor for the Howell High School Environmental Club for again hosting this event and engaging us in the celebration each year.

World Tai Chi Day

Tai Chi 2This is a relay of special events to celebrate World Tai Chi Day which will begin in New Zealand and end 24 hours later in Hawaii, creating a "wave of healing energy" to encircle the globe.

The annual World Tai Chi Day is officially recognized by the United Nations World Health Organization and aims to promote and educate the world to the benefits of practicing Tai Chi. Research has shown that the relaxed, slow, graceful, balanced, and coordinated movements of Tai Chi can increase the flow of Chi (energy), reduce anxiety, depression, and chronic pain conditions. It can boost the immune system, improve respiratory function, burn calories, dramatically improve balance, improve cardiovascular benefit, provide powerful stress management tools, and slow aspects of the aging process.

This year World Tai Chi Day in Howell will be held on Saturday, April 24 from 10 a.m. - 12 noon at the Bennett Recreation Center on the front lawn. The morning program will include free demonstrations and lessons from Paul Christensen who has 26 years of martial arts experience and over 12 years of teaching Tai Chi.
