Spring is finally here and we are getting excited about all the new programs that will be announced in our next program guide.  We've added gardening classes, golf leagues, photography classes, computer classes, and our Summer Day Camp.  We are gearing up for a spring and summer that will be truly memorable.

I continue to be amazed at the time, energy, and dedication that goes into programming our enrichment classes, our sports leagues, our drop in programs, and our special events. It is something that continues to amaze me.  Our staff has done an incredible job in juggling all the intricacies of instructor needs, times, dates, places, and the supplies needed.  In particular, I want to recognize Beth Schrader, our enrichment director, and Chris Galatis, our sports director for putting together what I consider to be an outstanding season of leisure time programs.   If you are around the building, or have time to pop them a quick note, please let them know how much you appreciate the work that goes into programming this organization.

The final touches are being added to the program guide and it will be distributed through the Livingston Daily Press & Argus on Sunday, April 13; to all elementary school students in the Howell Public Schools in their Friday packets on April 18; on our website at www.howellrecreation.org; and it will be mailed direct to your household for those that have joined the Howell Parks & Recreation as inaugural members.  We'll also be distributing it to places around the county so look for it at the Chamber, at the Library, at City Hall and Township Halls, and at other local businesses.  As always, you can also visit us at the Bennett or Barnard Community Centers if you want to pick one up in person.

Lobby to Repainted for Spring
Spring is in the air and we want to bring some of that sunshine and warmth inside the Bennett Recreation Center.

To celebrate the coming of spring and to kick off the beginning of registrations for the spring/summer enrichment classes, park activities, and sports leagues of the Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority, artist Carolyn Kinneson has been retained once again to create a spring/summer landscape from floor to ceiling on the lobby walls.

Kinneson will be in her "studio" at the Paul Bennett Recreation Center, 925 W. Grand River Ave. painting her spring/summer landscape beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 11.  She will be painting all day Saturday, April 12 and touching up and adding detail on Sunday, April 13.  The public is invited to come and watch her creative and innovative painting technique.  Watching Kinneson work will be fascinating and inspiring.

The lobby will be on "display" the following week, April 14-18 when the public is invited to come and take a peek at the fresh new look of the Recreation Center.  Tasty spring time treats will be available in the lobby from 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.  (Don't forget to pick up your spring/summer 2008 program guide.)

Senior Computer Classes Being Offered
One of the significant needs that we have heard from those of you over the age of 50 is how to work your computer, how to scan pictures, how to set up e-mail...things that many of us take for granted in this fast paced world.  We have set up a group of Saturday morning classes here at the Bennett Center to address your needs.

Beginning on Saturday, April 5, we'll have our first class "Learn to Use the Computer" from 9 a.m. - 10:30 a.m.  No prior computer experience is required for this class.  Topics:  start and turn off the computer, mouse, keyboard, windows, starting a program, creating, storing and printing a simple file, and a demonstration of the Internet.

Later that morning we'll also be presenting "Using the Internet" which will focus on how to navigate the Internet to read the news, get sports updates, see movie previews and locate websites about your favorite subjects.  You will be amazed what is "out there" !!!   This class will take place from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

There is a $8 flate rate fee for any of our computer classes.  Repeat classes will take place every other Saturday, so if you can't make this first one, call us and reserve your spot for another date and time.  Our space is limited, so first come-first serve.

The following Saturday, April 19, we'll be presenting two additional computer classes - "Using Scanners, Printers and Digital Cameras" from 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. and "Using E-mail on the Web" from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.   (These will also repeat every other Saturday.)

The Howell Area Parks and Recreation Authority will be out and about during the first few weeks of April showcasing some of our new programs and services.

On Friday, April 4th from 5-9 p.m. we'll have a couple of tables at the Community Resource Fair at the Home Show at Parker High School.  Come on over to our table and see what surprises we have in store for you.

We'll also be at the Howell Carnegie District Library on Saturday, April 12th from 2-4 p.m.  Stop by for some non-stop action on the lawn (if it isn't raining) and pick up one of our new spring/summer brochures, watch our fencing demonstration, and participate in some fun activities.  We are participating in the Library's Art, Adventures and Answers program which is working in partnership with community organizations to showcase the relationship between cultural, recreational and library resources.

And then on Saturday, April 19th we'll have a tent sent up on the Courthouse Lawn for EARTH DAY which is being sponsored by the Howell High School Environmental Club.  Stop by our booth for your chance to win a spruce seedling to plant in your yard.

We'll see you soon, when we are out and about....
