Howell Area
Parks & Recreation
Authority

February 6, 2008

The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority is taking a major step this week to reorganize and restructure staffing based on the transition from a department within the City of Howell to a stand-alone recreation authority.  Our board met earlier this month and outlined a draft budget (to be presented at the February 12th board meeting for adoption for the July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009 fiscal year) based on the contributions from each of the participating municipalities (City of Howell, Oceola, Marion and Genoa Townships) and from the program fees that are collected from participants.

We anticipate that the budget for the next fiscal year will reflect a significant decrease - from $1.2 million to $760,000.  Even with this reduction, we believe that we will be able to continue to produce quality programs and services that have significant impact within our community.   We know that some of our work will be changing...we will be adding new programs, reintroducing programs that have been on hold, molding old programs with new ideas, and eliminating others that are not helping move our vision forward.  We hope that you will be supportive of the changes taking place as we begin the process to position ourselves for success as a stand-alone organization.

As always, we'll keep you in the loop!

New "Trikes" at the Howell Recreation Preschool

Stop in any day of the week and you'll see one of the most active preschools in this area!  The Howell Recreation Preschool and Learning Center does two major fundraising activities each year and then lets the kids decide how to spend it.  And we are proud to announce that they got some new toys delivered this past week that will be the envy of everyone.

trikesThis year, we have four handsome new red heavy-duty tricycles to ride during their indoor playtime in the big room!  And when the weather gets nicer, you might even see them outside enjoying their new found joy!  In all honesty, we think they spent their money wisely!

Fall enrollment is now open for children 3 1/2 - 5 years old.  We've not only got our traditional morning and afternoon programs, but an extended day session that is sure to please many working parents.  Come in and have a look around.  We think you'll like what you see.  Call Deb Jacobs at 517/546-0693 for more information.

BROUGHT BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND!

We are again holding an indoor garage sale on Saturday, February 23, 2008.  This is your opportunity to sell new and used merchandise, clothing and collectibles, but space is limited- $24 for a table for residents of the authority or $28 for non-residents.   We only have a few tables left so call Carol or Sara in our front office at 517/546-0693 X0 to reserve your space today.

Also, on the same day and at the same place we are going to hold our first "Used Sports Equipment Sale".  Now that the holidays are over and new sports equipment has replaced many of the outdated items in your basement, closets and garages, we hope that you will consider donating your old, gently used equipment to the Howell Area Parks & Recreation.  We'll open the door from 9-3 p.m. that day and hopefully both you and Parks and Rec will make a few dollars to support our sports programming.

Here's how it works:

You do not need to be present to participate as all items will be tagged and sold by the Parks and Recreation Department.

All items must be dropped off prior to Friday, Feb. 22. and we will store these and tag them for the sale.  You may specifiy if you would like any of the proceeds (70/30 split to your benefit) or if you would like to donate all proceeds from the sale of your equipment to the programs of the Parks and Recreation Department.

Watch for the Classic Film Series debut in March

movie reelWe've had to make a change in the dates for the Classic Film Series from the 3rd Tuesday of the month to the 4th Tuesday.  The new dates are below.   We inadvertently scheduled this at the same time as one of the senior clubs that we sponsor and we apologize for our oversight.

The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority, the Howell Carnegie District Library and the Howell Theater have joined in partnership to produce a 6 month "Classic Film and Lunch Series" that will show nostalgic movies from the 1930-1950's once a month in historic downtown Howell.  Below is a listing of our tentative line-up of films that will be shown at 11 a.m. on the following dates at the Howell Theater:

March 25 - Gone with the Wind
Lunch at Diamonds

April 22 - Casablanca
Lunch at Mr. B's

May 27 - Great Escape
Lunch at Holiday Grill

June  24- Yankee Doodle Dandy
Lunch at Big Boy

July 22 -  Ben Hur
Lunch at Cleary's

August 26 - The Great Gadsby
Lunch at Mr. B's

As you can see, we have chosen a diverse monthly line-up of nostalgic films  that are sure to please our targeted audience of Livingston County seniors and stay-at-home parents/adults who love to experience and reminisce about the good 'ole days, see films on the "big screen" and want to get out of the house for a special day spent with friends and acquaintances.

The full experience for patrons is not confined to the movie theater though.  We will also be promoting a group dining experience at a downtown restaurant immediately following the show with $2 off coupons, and local merchants can "get into the act" by promoting shopping at their stores by having a special activity ready before or after lunch that incorporates the time period of the film, the characters of the film, the genre of the film, etc.

We are proud to announce that the Howell Downtown Development Authority has signed on as a full sponsor and Independence Village in Brighton will sponsor both our April and August films.

What do Butterfly's and the Oval Office Have in Common?
Nothing really!  But we thought it would be great to spend a day in Grand Rapids and our trip would include time at the Meijer Gardens and the Gerald Ford Museum on April 3, 2008.  For $95 you can experience the wonder of spring and this will be prime time for the butterfly hatch at Meijer Gardens when over 6,000 chrysalis are on exhibit in the emergence room.  (sorry, we cannot guarantee that the hatch will have taken place - only Mother Nature knows this for sure.)  We'll also tour the outdoor sculptures and tropical gardens.

Next on the itinerary will be lunch at the Grill at 1913 which is next door to the exquisite downtown Amway Hotel.  And then it is on to the Gerald R. Ford Museum where you can experience "a day in the Oval Office" and various memorabilia from the life and times of our 38th President, Gerald R. Ford.

For more information on this and other day and extended trips, please stop by the Bennett Recreation Center during our normal business hours - Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. or Saturday from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.  It will be a full and fun day to spend in Grand Rapids.
