Gift CertificateBoys Basketball season has begun! And what a beginning this has been!   I took the opportunity to "drop in" and watch the boys and their coaches begin practices at many of the gyms this past week.  It was an environment full of excitement and fun and it seemed that everyone was ready for the season to get into full swing.

Even after filling dozens of teams with 1st-6th graders we had even more children sign up to play than we had room for.  Those that registered early were the lucky ones, those that registered late are still on the wait list.

Our capacity is limited by two things:   1) how many coaches step forward to volunteer with our teams and 2) how many gyms we have access to.  We are hoping that we will be able to build our capacity of people and space in the coming year and make sure that no one is turned away next year.  We think we can find the space.  We hope that you are willing to step forward to provide the mentorship and coaching that we need to make our programs successful.  Call me if you want to be a part of the fun! 546-0693 X7702.

Saturday Hours Added

We are pleased to announce that as of January 1, 2008 we have extended our hours and are now open for your convenience each and every Saturday morning.

Cassie Matlock, one of our building/site supervisors and a familiar face to many of you, will be manning the front desk from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. so that you can come in and register for classes; pick up information for any of our sports leagues, trips and excursions, enrichment classes and special events.  You can also call in at 517/546-0693 X0 as we'll be answering the phones on Saturday mornings as well.

Our large room is leased out on many weekends, but if it's not, we're also willing to have open indoor recreation time to play shuffleboard, pickleball, dodgeball, or engage in other activities yet to be defined.

And just in case these new Saturday hours aren't conducive to your busy calendars, you can also stop over during our normal weekday hours, 8:30 - 5 p.m.  Monday through Friday.

Promoting being "GREEN" and Friendly to our Environment
Gift CertificateThe inaugeral "Holiday in the Park" celebration throughout the month of December at the Howell City Park was hugely successful and our plans are for this to become a regular addition to the holiday season.  As the decorations came down and we cleaned up the park we wanted to make sure that the evergreens that were purchased for decorating were put to use for a second life.

Tom Richardson, superintendent of the Parks & Cemetery Division for the City of Howell and his crew  were key players in helping us to not only set up the "Holiday in the Park" but also to dismantle and chip up the remains which are now "free for the taking" under the watertower at the City Park.

Introducing Two New Building/Site Supervisors
Our winter schedule of classes, leagues and drop in's are very complex and we use anywhere from 7-12 facilities throughout our community each and every evening.   So to make sure that we were covering our bases, it will come as no surprise that we needed a few more individuals to act as building and site supervisors.

We are pleased to introduce two new staff members - Dennis Ghrist and Craig Heger.  Dennis began work with us in early December and you'll see him many evenings working at the Barnard Community Center, and Bennett Recreation Center.  Craig joined us after the holidays and will be working mostly at the gyms with our boys basketball league and drop in programs.

We are pleased that both are working with us and a part of our team!
Rentals and Rate Increase

Looking for a place to hold your next event, rehearsal, bridal or baby shower?  Have a family reunion coming up and need more space?  Or how about holding your nonprofit group meetings in a more suitable location than your basement?  If you need a space for any of these activities and more, then we have a room for you!  The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority has rooms available to rent at the Barnard Community Center and at Bennett Recreation Center at a price that you will find affordable.  We have rooms to suit just about any size  - from small group meetings of 10 to full size groups up to 150.  Our full-service kitchen at the Bennett Recreation Center is also an attractive feature for events where you want to cater or cook your own food.  Best of all, our room rates are very comparable to other venues throughout the Howell area.

As of January 1, 2008, nonprofit rental rates for rooms at Barnard Community Center and at Bennett Recreation Center will increase to $20/hour.  The board of trustees also made clear that this policy is for charitable, fraternal, religious and nonprofit organizations that are located within or do a majority of their work in Livingston County.

For further information on new rates and fees, please contact Carol Tallman at 517/546-0693 XO.
