Learn to Cook the Low Fat Way |

Renee Chodkowski, our resident cooking instructor is at it again -- this time helping all of you keep your New Year's resolution to reduce fat in your diets. Her "Deliciously Lowfat" cooking class will take place on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at the Howell High School Freshman Campus in Room 129 from 7-9 p.m. This is a popular class that showcases great low-fat and no-fat foods without compromising taste, texture or budget.
Cost for residents of the City of Howell and Oceola Township is $14, Marion and Genoa Township residents is $18, and non-residents are $24. An additional $10 lab fee is due to instructor on the night of the class.

Community Spotlight: Howell Sea Serpents Swim Team |

LATE BREAKING NEWS!
The Howell Sea Serpents are a competitive swim club for kids ages 5 to 18 years old. They practice year round at the Howell Aquatic Center Monday through Friday usually from 4:30 -7:30 p.m. Meets are held normally on Thursdays or Fridays and Championship meets are on the weekend in December and in March.
Tryouts for their winter season take place tonight - Friday, January 4th from 5:30-7 p.m. If you can't make this tryout, please call 517/548-5840 for more information or to schedule a tryout.

Current PreSchool Openings and Fall Registration |

If you are looking for an active, high energy preschool for your three or four year old, then we have just the spot for you. We have immediately openings and we are gearing up for Fall registration. We guarantee that your child will enjoy music, art, dramatic play, storytelling and much, much more in a postive, loving and learning environment.
As the new year rolls in, we have a few spaces open in our three year old preschool class that meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:30 - 11:45 a.m. All of our programs are play-based and offer innovative high interest activities, which are designed to keep children eager, busy and ready to learn. All children who attend the preschool must be potty trained.
Our four year old morning class is completely full but we are looking at opening an afternoon class beginning February 1st on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 12:45 p.m. - 3 p.m. To open this session we will need atleast 8 children to be enrolled.
And if you are looking for this FALL, our pre-registration will begin the week of February 25th. So make sure that you mark your calendars.

Yoga and Tai Chi Classes Offered |

The practice of Yoga employs the use of various physical and mental exercises that are essential to achieve a sense of both physical and mental well being. We are partnering with Kil's Tae Kwon Do in Genoa Township to offer this class for ages 18 and up on Thursday evenings from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Bring your Yoga mat and chose the best month to participate:

Cost ranges from $40 for residents of Howell and Oceola Township, $56 for residents of Marion and Genoa Townships, and $80 for non-residents. Call 517/546-0693 to register today.
We are also adding an evening schedule to our Adult Tai Chi classes. This popular program employs master teacher, Doug Taylor who will help you learn to use your inner strengths to maximize your place in the universer. Tai Chi uses slow movememnt stretching and agility training to improve muscle tone, poster and balance.
New classes have been added on Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning January 21 thru mid-May from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Howell High School Field House. Costs are based on residency and can be paid on a per session basis. City of Howell and Oceola Township residents pay $2.50/session, Marion and Genoa Township residents pay $3.25/session, and non-residents pay $5.00/session. Breakfast is Now Served at the Howell Senior Center |

On February 6th, the Howell Senior Center will be initiating a monthly Wednesday breakfast program that is sure to please all you early risers. The first Wednesday of each month from 7:30 a.m .- 9 a.m. we'll be serving up two choices of breakfast - bacon and scrambled eggs, or bacon and pancakes. The cost is $3 for the food and $1 extra for milk, juice or coffee. We hope to see you there!

The City of Howell will hold its annual retreat on Friday, January 11 and Saturday, January 12 beginning each day at 8:30 a.m. The Council retreat is an annual review of department projects and proposed plans and the setting of goals and objectives. The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority's transition planning will be part of the agenda for those days. Citizens are welcome and encouraged to attend. Be a Guitar Hero! Learn to Play! |

To everyone who has ever dreamed of playing the guitar - this class is for you. This enrichment class is taught by Brandon Stults from Brandon's School of Rock! He will teach the basic fundamentals to start learning guitar: tuning, reading tabs and notes, learn basic chords and power chords, and also learn the basic scales. By the end of this 6 week class you will learn blues progression and a few easy campfire songs. Please bring to class a guitar, amp and pick.
This class is taught at the Barnard Community Center on Thursday evenings beginning January 10 and continuing through February 14 from 7-8 p.m. The cost is $75 for residents of the City of Howell and Oceola Township, $95 for Marion and Genoa Township residents, and $150 for non-residents. In addition, a class book must be purchased for $25 payable to the instructor at the first class.

The Howell Area Parks & Recreation Authority was formed in 2006 and serves residents in the City of Howell, Oceola Township, Genoa Township and Marion Township. Our mission is to enrich the lives of the citizens of the Howell area by promoting active and healthy lifestyles. Public meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in the Howell City Council Chambers, lower level, City Hall, 611 E. Grand River Ave., Howell.
