Welcome Message

Welcome to the first ever edition of Golfers' Travels, the monthly Newsletter of SeniorGolfExchange.com.

This is intended to provide our Members, and interested subscribers, with content designed to increase readers' enjoyment of the game of golf, particularly those who combine their golf with a love of travel, and expanding their list of golfing friendships.

Each month we will share tips on how to maximise the benefits of your Membership of SeniorGolfExchange.com, but beyond that we will take our directions on what will be included from Member feedback.  So please let us know what topics you find most interesting.

Member Bio

Every month our Newsletter will feature some additional insights into one of our Members, and upcoming events in their local area.  Hopefully this will provoke some wishful thinking and kickstart some exchange enquiries.

Unlike generic Home Exchange sites that concentrate almost exclusively on their Members' property, SeniorGolfExchange.com places equal emphasis on the Members themselves - what is there in their interests and outlook that will make them compatible exchange partners, whether you are contemplating a home exchange or hospitality exchange.

April's Member Bio features Gary and Jan Wallis from Melbourne Australia.

Christmas Star

For Members wishing to learn more about Gary and Jan's exchange offer, they can be found at Member ID 43 here.

Gary and Jan are perfect examples of keen golfers, with great connections and interesting backgrounds, that we are delighted to welcome as Members of SeniorGolfExchange.com.

Gary has exhibited a high degree of skill at most sports, including Australian Rules Football at the highest level - at the most famous of all Clubs - Collingwood.  Golf however continues to challenge him - as it does all of us.

Jan is in a unique category - she coaches golf part time on a professional basis, while retaining her amateur status.  So you not only enjoy Jan's hospitality, but you may get a couple of lessons as well.

Gary and Jan are natural and generous hosts.  As part of their business commitments they run Corporate Golf Days and Golf Tours, having recently returned from hosting their second trip to the 12 course Mission Hills Resort in China.

As this is published, Gary and Jan are in Augusta, enjoying their first trip to The Masters.

In summary, with Gary and Jan you tick all the boxes:-

-         very comfortable, well located family home

-         long time members of Heidelberg Golf Club, with access to other sought-after courses

-         great hosts with an intimate understanding of what the travelling senior golfer appreciates

-         flexibility in the timing, length and type of exchange they will happily consider

So, why not contact Gary and Jan and start the ball rolling on what could be your first exchange facilitated via SeniorGolfExchange.com.

If you were looking to coincide a trip to Melbourne with one of the many golf events close by, here are some to consider:-

  • July 08 - Victorian Women's Amateur Championship - Peninsula
  • September 08 - Australian Men's Senior Match Play - Barwon Heads
  • October 08 - Victoria Men's Senior Amateur Championship - Rosebud

Still not sure if "exchanging" is right for you?
19th hole

Not surprisingly, as we introduce the home and hospitality exchange concept to Senior Golfers with no exchange experience, we have detected some concerns about "handing over our home to people we really don't know yet".

From our early research with Senior Golfers we took the decision to offer our Members the widest range of exchange options, namely:-

-         home exchange - a reciprocal arrangement to exchange vacant possession of each others home, simultaneously or not.

-         hospitality exchange - one member stays home and hosts the other, and later the roles are reversed

-         hospitality exchange without accommodation - one Member hosts the other, introducing them to the local golf community, enjoying golf and other shared interests, but without providing accommodation within their home.

This third option allows for situations where a Member's home is unavailable, short or long term - perhaps you're accommodating a family member or major renovations are taking place - or where you want to participate in the golf travel experiences, expanding your circle of golf friends, but are not yet ready to provide in-home accommodation.

So if you wish to start without accommodation involvement, that's perfectly OK - or perhaps you're comfortable with Hospitality Exchange but not Home Exchange just yet.

Completely your decision - our system enables you to nominate the exchange type you are seeking.

The Mental Game

Whether you are super-competitive, or just enjoy a good score every now and then, Senior Golfers need to consider the mental component of their performance.  Even if we can't match the club head speed of younger golfers, we can excel at The Mental Game.Christmas Star

To assist us, we will present a regular tip from Michael Anthony, acknowledged world authority on the mental aspect of sports performance, and author of "The Mental Keys to Improve your Golf".

Serving Two Masters

I do a lot of consulting with golfers who desire to lower their scores. Some are preparing to make their mark on the professional tours, some are trying to break 100 and others are somewhere in between.

Even though there is a huge difference in the natural talent and mechanical skills within this wide range of golfers, there is a common denominator that allows me to help all of them. All golfers, including Tiger Woods, experience a certain degree of negative emotions, which adversely affect their brain's chemistry and performance.

All I have to do to help a golfer shoot lower scores at any level is show them how to reduce their negative emotions and increase their positive emotions. It is almost like magic and works every time if you use "The Mental Keys".

The more you learn to master your emotions, the better you will play at any level. The more you master your mechanics, the lower you will score. It doesn't get any simpler than that.

In golf most negative emotions originate from concern of the outcome. The key to controlling your emotions is to realize that you can not serve two masters and be effective. You can choose to be process oriented or remain concerned with the outcome.

The only purpose that the outcome has is to give you direction and feedback to make the necessary adjustments to improve your mechanical and mental games. If you train your mind to focus solely on the process of improving and do the work, it is only a matter of time until you achieve your desired outcome.

If you insist on serving two masters by being concerned with the outcome while you are trying to improve the process, you greatly diminish your chances for success.

If you have not read "The Mental Keys To Improve Your Golf", you will benefit greatly from my book by seeing the whole picture instead of just pieces contained in my mental tips.
I guarantee it! So order now and lower your score.

ScoreGolf hole

John and Bob were two of the most competitive rivals at the club.  Neither man trusted the other's arithmetic.

One day they were playing a heated match and watching each other like hawks. After holing out on the fourth green and marking his six on the scorecard, John asked Bob, "What'd you have?

Bob went through the motions of mentally counting up. "Six!" he said and then hastily corrected himself,." No, no....a five."

Calmly John marked the scorecard, saying out loud "Eight!"

"Eight?" Bob said, "I couldn't have had eight."

John said, "Nope, you claimed six, then changed it to five, but actually you had seven."

"Then why did you mark down eight?" asked Bob.

John told him, "One stroke penalty, for improving your lie."

You can quote me....

"Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated; it satisfies the soul and frustrates the intellect. It is at the same time rewarding and maddening - and it is without a doubt the greatest game mankind has ever invented." - Arnold Palmer.

Travel Tip
Travel

Senior Golfers who are frequent travellers should need no convincing about the benefits of well researched, specialist Travel Insurance.

Our research strongly suggests you patronise those insurers who specialise in the Seniors' market; they understand such issues as implications of Pre-existing Medical Conditions as we get older.

We also need Travel Insurance which recognises the replacement cost of a full set of golf clubs and bag.

Two insurers we recommend you check out within Australia are:-

COTA Travel Insurance Phone 1300 1300 50

National Seniors Travel Insurance
 Phone 1300 50 50 99

For readers in all locations around the world, if you have a recommended Travel Insurance provider, please let us know and we will add a list to our Resources section within the website.

The ROI and green impact of Home Exchange and Hospitality Exchange

With more than 130,000 households listed on internet-based Home Exchange sites, it is universally accepted the most compelling reasons to join include:-

-         the ability to live like locals, anywhere in the world

-         the space and comfort of private residences versus hotel rooms

-         the financial savings on accommodation, meals and entertainment, possibly vehicle hire, and in our case, golf equipment and member introduced green fees

But Senior Golfers around the world have two issues of current concern that are relevant in the consideration of the Home Exchange concept - Return on Investment (ROI) and impact on the environment.

Return on Investment

With world stock markets' performance over the last 6 months or so ranging from worrying to disastrous for all share based investments, consideration of ROI on Seniors' major property investment, their home (and in some cases their second or holiday home) becomes more pressing.

Through the Home Exchange concept, the ROI on your home increases substantially when it includes several golf travel experiences, which avoid significant accommodation and other costs.

More so with holiday homes. One major concern when deciding to invest in a holiday home is whether you will be restricted to having most of your future holidays in the same location.  Via Home Exchange, you are able to transform your holiday home investment into accommodation free travel anywhere in the world, and to eliminate those weeks when your holiday home is left empty and unprotected.

The Environment

The "green" argument for home exchange is diverse and persuasive - but a major consideration is the increased use of existing housing resources, the homes of Members, versus the need to construct additional hotel facilities - particularly in environmentally sensitive areas which attract golf course development.

If you wish to contribute to these discussions, or to suggest other items you want aired at our 19th Hole, please let Mr Gain know here.
