Planning with the end in mind essential for teaching and assessment
The following article is excerpted from the Educators' Resource Guide: Assessment, Evaluation and Reporting of Student Achievement. The guide is written by staff at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board and will be published by ETS Canada in May. This article is written by Damian Cooper.
Teachers everywhere today are concerned that they have too much curriculum "to cover" and too little time in which to do it. Furthermore, increasingly in the middle and secondary grades, teachers feel overburdened with all the marking they have to do and, in some cases, find themselves questioning the worth of spending so much time marking when measured against the improvement they see in student learning.
Added to these challenges is the current focus on success for all students. In other words, teachers are now expected to bring all of the students in their classes to levels of success as defined by the Ministry of Education. | |

What is the secret to improving student writing?
Research shows that students at all levels improve their writing when they are provided with feedback and encouraged to revise and rewrite.
The ETS Criterion Online Writing Service can help.
Criterion is an award-winning classroom-based online writing assessment and learning tool. The program provides feedback to students and motivates them to revise their work. It complements instruction provided by the teacher, reducing the time required to mark and comment on essays.
