Reading assessment key to student improvement
By Gerry Brennan, Director of Instruction, School District 87 (Stikine), British Columbia
"We need to do something about our students' reading skills." When this statement was shared it was an opportunity to enhance a Professional Learning Community and support the staff of Tahltan School with their literacy quest.
If you were to drive in the northwest corner of British Columbia you would find a well maintained clay-based gravel road that leads to Telegraph Creek. Although only 112 kilometres, the windy, up and down narrow road requires a safe 2 hours to complete the journey, during which time you will marvel at the earth's history, geography and geology that is exposed the further you travel. The road will descend into the Tuya River valley, then you will ascend and drop into Canada's Grand Canyon, carved by the Stikine River, but only after crossing the historic Tahltan River, home to the Tahltan First Nations. On the high bank of the Stikine River and juxtaposed against this scenery is Tahltan School, a part of School District 87.
