Strengthening instructional practice through assessment for learning

The Ottawa Catholic School Board encompasses 85 schools with a student population of approximately 40,000 students. The board is participating in one of the initiatives sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Education this school year, entitled Schools in the Middle, focused on the role of assessment for learning strategies as a way to strengthen and support instructional practice.

The criteria for Schools in the Middle were based on standardized provincial assessment (EQAO) results. School results had to be stable or declining over time, with between 50 and 74 percent of students achieving the provincial standard on the majority of EQAO assessments.
