The principal as assessment leader
By Brian Noonan and Pat Renihan
Part One: Some Underlying Principles
This is the first in a series of four articles on the principal's role as assessment leader. The series will provide a review of key considerations and practices in an increasingly important area for educational professionals at all levels. Assessment leadership has in recent years emerged as one of the most critical aspects of the principal's instructional leadership role.
Clearly, assessment practices are key components of teaching and learning, student achievement, and professional accountability. Ensuring that those principles and practices are understood by teachers is a responsibility of the contemporary instructional leader. It is also clear that managing and encouraging assessment literacy for teachers is a tall order for principals. Therefore, principals need to be prepared to understand and practice forms of distributed leadership, collaborative culture-building and collective learning to enhance assessment literacy among classroom teachers.
