Improving student learning through formative assessment

Like Howard Carter sleuthing around the Valley of the Kings for the answer to some great cryptic riddle, Reynolds Secondary School in Greater Victoria has, for the past several years, been working to unearth the mysteries and complexities of assessment and evaluation.

It has been digging into the research and experimenting with its practice in an attempt to find the right approaches to improving student learning in the school.  Much of the research has centred on formative assessment strategies, using the kind of evidence found in the research and practice of educators like Lorna Earl, Douglas Reeves and Dylan Wiliam.

ETS Canada delivers successful workshops

On November 17, Rick Stiggins delivered a workshop titled Classroom Assessment for Student Learning to 40 educators in Toronto.  Rick's presentation focused on the two "big" ideas - assessment for learning and accurate assessment - found in the book Classroom Assessment for Student Learning: Doing it Right - Using it Well (CASL).

On the following day in Calgary, Jan Chappuis presented a workshop titled Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning to 80 educators in Calgary.  This session, based on the content in Jan's new book, Seven Strategies of Assessment for Learning, helped to deepen participants' understanding of how assessment for learning can be woven into daily teaching practice.
