Assessment for Learning Newsletter, February 2009 www.etscanada.ca
Assessment for learning has been a major focus at Surrey School District No. 36 for the last three years. During this period, the assessment for learning conversation has gradually shifted from a focus on theory, to a focus on practice. There are a number of programs and initiatives in place in Surrey that are successfully integrating assessment for learning with instruction.

Surrey District serves the cities of White Rock and Surrey and the rural area of Barnston Island.  With approximately 67,000 students, Surrey has the largest student enrollment in British Columbia.  A rich mosaic of cultures is represented within the student population.  Approximately 42 per cent of students attending school in the district are from households in which a language other than English is spoken.
