Small school board has focus on individual students

Although the challenges of delivering quality instruction and assessment in a remote and isolated community are many, School District 87 (The Stikine) is attempting to meet the needs of students, parents, and the community at large in creative ways.

The Stikine is the largest geographic district in British Columbia with 10 hours of driving time between its most southern and northern schools. Encompassing 188,034 square kilometres, the District claims home to Canada's 'Grand Canyon' - the Stikine River and Gold Rush history in Atlin on the edge of the Yukon Territory border.  The school population is composed mainly of First Nations students.  The Tahltan, Tlingit, and Kaska Peoples are the original First Nations of the region and have made rich and vibrant contributions to local culture and history.
