(August 14, 2012 - Phoenix, AZ) Arizona residents are invited to participate in discussions on how civic engagement and civil discourse can strengthen their communities and effectively address challenges facing our state. A number of Arizona Town Hall Community Outreach Programs are planned for various cities and towns throughout the state. This statewide traveling discussion takes place over several months and focuses on recommendations developed from the most recent and Centennial-designated 100th Town Hall on Civic Engagement.
The purpose of the outreach programs is to encourage continued input and priority setting for each community visited. The Civic Engagement recommendations include issue areas such as how to improve civics education, ideas for increasing community engagement in the political and governmental process, energizing youth to boost their community involvement, enhancing the use of civil discourse versus polarizing speech, how best to harness social media and technology to share information and ideas, among other topics.
Presenters of the outreach programs include representatives from the local community who participated in the April Town Hall. The panels present recommendations that came from that gathering and then the public in attendance is invited to comment, prioritize and determine what might work for their own particular community. (See a full listing of the statewide events planned.)
To reserve a seat for each of these programs, call the Arizona Town Hall at 602-252-9600 or register online at http://www.aztownhall.org/Community_Outreach_Programs. Seating is limited and by reservation only to the breakfast and luncheon events. The background research done for the Town Hall on Civic Engagement and the final recommendations reports can be downloaded at www.aztownhall.org. A summary of the full report will be distributed during each of the programs.
For 50 years, Arizona Town Hall has brought Arizona citizens together to learn about, talk about and - most importantly - determine what must be done to address Arizona's toughest issues. The resulting Arizona Town Hall reports serve as a valuable resource for policymakers and community leaders because the recommendations represent the informed consensus of Arizonans from different political perspectives, professions and geographic areas of the state.
