Succeed: How We Can Reach Our Goals By: Heidi Grant Halvorson, Ph.D. Reviewed by: Brian Beirl
Now for something completely different!
Make a list of goals, be specific, set a time and be positive...Yada Yada Yada.
We have all read the books and listened to the lectures on goal setting. Have you ever wondered why we aren't more successful in achieving our goals? Heidi Grant Halvorson, a research psychologist, approaches goal setting with the most realistic and scientifically based viewpoint that I have ever encountered.
Here are just a few of her findings:
· One style of goal setting does not fit all. Are you a preventive person, attempting to lessen the negative outcome or are you a promotional person that is focused only on the positive outcome. If you are not aware of your style of decision making, your decision to commit to a certain goal may not match your style and you are doomed to failure.
· It's not how much will power we have but how we manage our self control, and we only have so much self control. If we attempt too many goals at once; i.e. trying to quit smoking and lose weight at the same time, we will most likely fail at both. Our self control is limited so focus on one at a time.
· If we do not understand our co-workers and their style, we can surprisingly sabotage their progress by being too positive with them. An employee that has a goal to prevent failure in a project and is encouraged by the "power of positive thinking" boss, may become intimidated, immobilized and fail.
This book presents ideas backed by clinical trial and research that turns traditional goal setting dogma upside down. If you have a goal to read just one book this year, make it this one. |
