Cooking from the Heart
Meet Laniakea's New Culinary Team
by Cynthia Fisher, Member Services Representative Laniakea will once again be opening it's doors again for lunch. Of course, many members have been asking, "Who are our new Chefs?" The answer to this question is finally here as Tiffanie Luke, Food and Beverage Manager, and Chris Okuhara, Sous Chef, prepare a new menu for a newly renovated dining room. Tiffanie and Chris met while training in culinary school at Kapiolani Community College and transitioned their friendship into a working relationship as they worked alongside each other at Starbucks. For Chris, who will be experiencing his first restaurant opening, he views beginning work at the YWCA as a step up in his career and a good opportunity. While Tiffanie, a former volunteer for the YWCA's Life Inc. program, is familiar with the impact the YWCA's programs can have on our members and the community. At the heart of Laniakea, is good food, good people, and a good cause! As we prepare to open our Dining Room, many members have been asking for opportunities to bring the community together over food while benefiting such youth programs as Café Y and Life Inc. Their philosophy: "We cook from the heart and it reflects in the flavor of the food. Love really is an essential ingredient." They compare working in the kitchen to being on a team. While studying at KCC, Tiffanie and Chris were on a team called the KCC American Culinary Federation Junior Culinary Team. Those experiences helped them learn to work together and strengthened their bond over food. This bond is the same that now extends to their staff, ensuring they never want to leave the kitchen. Tiffanie, who says she "fell into" this career path and loved it and Chris, who came from a restaurant family and loves having something to put his energy into, are eager to meet new members and welcome the old faces and will strive to exceed expectations. People connect with food and it is these connections that Tiffanie Luke and Chris Okuhara cannot wait to form. |

Now it is time for our community to lift up our leaders once again and honor four amazing women in 2009! These women are our advocates, our care givers, our teachers, our mothers, our coaches, our sisters, our daughters... our leaders. Their success has in turn raised the quality of all our lives and will shape the future of the next generation.
Let's all come together as a powerful community on June 19, 2009 at the YWCA's 32nd LeaderLuncheon and perpetuate the legacy.
