Physical Activity Increases with Peaceful Playgrounds

Three years ago Nassau County Health Department team members faced an overwhelming obstacle.  Statistics in their region in Florida indicated that 18.5 % of children under 18 were obese or overweight.

They researched interventions related to childhood obesity and decided to implement the Peaceful Playgrounds program at a local elementary school. Peaceful Playgrounds is an evidenced-based program that promotes unstructured play at recess by encouraging physical activity. The program involves designing play areas and using activity guides to describe games and other activities to encourage physical activity among students. The team's improvement theory were that, if Peaceful Playgrounds was implemented, then more children would be physically active at recess.

The chart below shows the improvement in the number of physically activity children pre and post implementing Peaceful Playgrounds.

Pedometers: Small tool with big impact in fighting childhood obesity

Pedometers are popular as  an aid to kids in fighting fat.

Counting steps can be just as effective as counting calories.  The go run a lap has been replaced in many schools with motivating walking programs where children walk across the U.S. using a school map to chart classroom progress and points of interest.

Peaceful Playground's walking program called, "We Count" includes a unique feature of Songs in Motion which are cadences much like military chants used while running.  You can hear some of the running chants here.  Songs in Motion.

The We Count Walking Program uses pedometers as an aid in fighting childhood obesity.

The We Count Program  is based on research that indicates that inexpensive step-counting devices (pedometers) motivate and educate kids to walk and be more active, thereby impacting the alarming number of overweight children.
