Withdrawing recess as punishment. Does it work?
|
Children typically love recess so it
seems quite logical that withdrawing recess from children who misbehave
or fail to do assignments is an appropriate disciplinary approach.
But some argue that withholding recess does more harm that good. Listen
to this segment and consider the pros and cons.

Just Released: Songs in Motion Cadence CD
|
Songs in Motion Cadence CD |
Walking and running made fun.
The We Count Walking Program uses pedometers and comes with a curriculum including mini lessons on physical activity and nutrition.
The program's design is based on research that indicates that
inexpensive step-counting devices (pedometers) motivate and educate kids
to walk
and be more active,
thereby impacting the alarming number of overweight children.
We are adding a new element to the We Count package called Songs in Motion Cadence CD. Preview clips of each song or purchase on CD Baby.

The Architecture of Recess
|
Early childhood outdoor environments require a number of key elements according to school architect, Gerald Reifert.
Several of the design elements refer to activities and areas for motor development which allow children to test their limits and areas to develop competency in a developmentally appropriate environment.
For a discussion of all the elements read Architect of recess.

Physical Activity the Brain's Fuel
|
Academics and Physical Activity | The human brain is a
miraculous organ, and over the last two decades we have learned more
about the brain than we have in the entire history of the human race.
Advancements in brain imaging have allowed researchers to discover a
vital link between brain health and physical activity. The effects
of physical activity increase the brain's ability to learn and make
vital neural connections throughout our lifespan and especially during
the brain's formative years in childhood.
Physical Activity and the Brain's Fuel further explains the link between academics and physical activity.
