Can Physical Education Make you Smarter?
|
For some time, researchers have known that exercise changes the structure of the brain and affects thinking.
Ten
years ago scientists at the Salk Institute in California published the
groundbreaking finding that exercise stimulates the creation of new
brain cells. But fundamental questions remain, like whether exercise
must be strenuous to be beneficial. Should it be aerobic? What about
weight lifting? And are the cognitive improvements permanent or
fleeting?
The answers to these questions can be found in the NY Times article, "Phys Ed: What Sort of Exercise Can Make You Smarter?" By Gretchen Reynold. |

Take it Outside Week
|
RESTON, VA, September 3, 2009
-- To increase outdoor play while celebrating the environment, early
childhood education and care centers are invited to join Head Start
Centers across the country in participating in the inaugural Take
It Outside Week, October 19 - 23, 2009. Presented by Head
Start Body Start National Center for Physical Development and Outdoor
Play (HSBS), the national initiative is sponsored by the National Association
for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE) and the American Association
for Physical Activity and Recreation (AAPAR). Its purpose is to get
children outside, connect with the natural world, and increase physical
activity. HSBS
will provide programs with everything they need to celebrate Take
It Outside Week including activity ideas, tips for facilitating
play, and suggestions for enhancing the environment. From Books
That Move You to 15 Simple Ways to Get Moving, the activities
are designed to increase physical activity for young children and promote
family involvement. Head Start Centers serve over 900,000 children and
their families. For a wonderful array of free resources about

General Mills Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soups Labels Equals Equipment for Playground
|
The beginning of the school year is a great time to think about clip-and-save programs like Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup Labels. PTA/PTO
groups redeem product labels or proofs of purchase for cash or
products. These two programs are popular due to their simplicity, and familiar
products parents already purchase. An added bonus is that they eliminate the need for door-to-door
sales.
