GRANTS
newsletter grants
Issue: #8 August 2009
Greetings!

This month's newsletter provides information regarding Peaceful Playgrounds New Pricing, introduction of the new Peaceful Playgrounds Bonus Pack, and a featured article, "How to Keep Cool at School".

When is it too hot to play?
As most of the nation heads back to school facing triple digit heat  schools face the challenges associated with outdoor recess and overheated classrooms.  Principals and physical educators will face daily decisions regarding children's heat health on the playground.

In this featured article we review some information regarding different playground challenges and solutions to those problems.

Of particular concern to schools is that "kids absorb more heat than adults while sweating less. The result is a greater propensity for heat cramps, exhaustion or heat stroke,"  according to Dr. Melinda Bossenmeyer, also known as the Recess Doctor. So how hot is too hot for physical activity? The determination depends on a number
of factors including:

1) how high is the humidity,
2) how hot is it on the blacktop,
3) what kind of access do children have to water to hydrate,
4) is there a shade area with benches to cool off , etc.
5) length of playtime and sun exposure

***** The single most important factor to acknowledge is children seldom complain when over heated and most children rarely self regulate.

Peaceful Playgrounds Program Change: Sept. 1, 2009
INTRODUCING  New pricing and  components

newsletter grantsBased on our research and survey results,  Peaceful Playgrounds will no longer be sold as independent parts.  Rather, the Program will come in a large kit of components that insure success when implemented properly.  For that reason we have bundled our current Peaceful Playgrounds  Program Package with the Companion Equipment Package, the Instructional Games DVDS's, the paint machine and striping paint, Recess Roll Out Stencil Set, school Set of Activity Guides, school training webinar "Peaceful Playgrounds?" and the Peaceful Playgrounds Site License.

The complete package represents  a 20% savings over the individual pricing.  Beginning September 1, 2009 the only way for non-licenses holders to purchase   Peaceful Playgrounds will be through ordering the Peaceful Playgrounds Comprehensive Package at  $3999.  If you currently hold a Peaceful Playgrounds License then you can call our offices regarding any components that you are missing and we will be pleased to assist you in purchasing missing component parts.  877-444-9888

Peaceful Playgrounds research indicates the importance of implementing the program properly.  Our survey of principals indicated that schools getting the best results were schools who had purchased all the components and had implemented them.  For example, schools that bought the program but did not purchase the companion equipment package did not report the same positive results in increase in physical activity.  A number of other researchers have reported the importance of "loose equipment" (balls, bean bags, jump ropes) in increasing physical activity.

The Instructional Games DVD's are especially important for schools without physical education teachers who often have the responsibility of teaching all students the rules to each recess game and how to play.  Since most of our games are unique and created by Peaceful Playgrounds Inc even many PE teachers reported  that they had never played many of the games and found the Instructional Games DVD's essential.

We also continue to receive feedback regarding locating proper striping paint.  For this reason, we are in the process of being able to provide you with the colored striping paint in 4 primary colors: red, blue, yellow and green  which we plan to include in the above package price in addition to the striping machine and white outline paint.

Free Peaceful Playgrounds Training Webinar until 2010
As many of you know, we have made contact with most of you who bought Peaceful Playgrounds over the past two years.  Our survey indicates that you need and would like additional assistance in training your staff. For this reason we are offering free Peaceful Playgrounds Webinars for your individual staff.  We are currently offering this service.  A number of schools have taken advantage of this free webinar offer. We encourage all schools with a Peaceful Playgrounds License to call us and arrange an individual school webinar where you can get personalize assistance with your implementation questions, as well as, the initial Peaceful Playgrounds Training.   This service will be free until Jan. 1, 2010.  Schedule your  45 minute webinar today during a staff meeting this l year.
