PEP Grant Applications to be Released Jan. 15, 2009

Physical Education for Progress (PEP) Grant Request for Proposals are scheduled to be announced on January 15, 2009 by the U.S. Department of Education.  The deadline for the applications will be March 6, 2009.  PEP grants may be used for physical education and physical activity programming.

Are you planning on applying for a PEP grant this spring?  Peaceful Playgrounds has hired two experienced PEP grant writers to assist you!   We review applications and give feedback free of charge if you have included any of our products in your application.  We assist in writing your complete PEP Application if you meet the following criteria:  1)  you are applying as a school district or multiple agency applicant, 2) you designate a district/agency representative that will work closely with our grant writers to gather current data and surveys needed for writing the application, and 3) you have your district's/agency's approval for submission.  If you meet the above stated criteria contact our offices at 877-444-9888 to discuss your request.

If you are planning on writing your own PEP grant don't miss out on our informative free PEP Grant Webinars which can be found at: http://www.peacefulplaygrounds.com/webinars.htm.  PEP Grant  Webinars will be offered twice monthly through the March application deadline.

Finally, don't forget to download samples of winning applications from our website at http://www.peacefulplaygrounds.com/pdf/winningpep2006.pdf.  Also on the PEP grants webpage you will find "Everything you need to succeed in applying for a PEP Grant" and other resources for download.  If you are planning on including Peaceful PlaygroundsŪ, Fundamental Movement Program or the We Count Pedometer Walking Program download our  Peaceful Playgrounds Program research and narrative to easily cut-and-paste into your grant application.

ONLINE LEARNING  : Playground Supervisor Training
Online Courses

"The fact that principals often experience recess as chaos and that recess is inadequately staffed are clearly related," according to a research report called Recess Rules.

More appropriate staffing and training would go a long way toward eliminating recess-related headaches and disruptions that spill over into the classroom environment," according to Robert Wood Johnson researchers.

Sound familiar?   Online Playground Supervisor Training is now up and running.  Trained Playground Supervisors limit your liability and keep children safe.

The cost of one accident and serious injury wherein a school district or agency is found negligent by not providing safe activities or supervision could pay for a supervisor training  program for years. . .

This course details playground surfacing, play structure safety, and playground supervision.

The course highlights legal supervision responsibilities and "how to keep kids safe".

Peaceful PlaygroundsŪ Site License holders can take advantage of our 1/2 price introductory special.  Train your entire staff for the  introductory price of $199.  For more information   e mail Andrea@peacefulplaygrounds.com or call 877-444-9888.
School and district discounts available on request.  Online course participants will take a 20 question quiz at the end of the training.  A course completion certificate is sent when passing the quiz and completing the course.

Individual online courses are $29 per participant and may be paid online using Pay Pal.  Schools and districts may use purchase orders and you will receive passcodes for assigning to your staff for entry into the courses.

Bullying Prevention: Life Lessons in Good and Evil
Bullying
Playgrounds: the perfect laboratory for Life Lessons
As educators, we are called to insert "life lessons" into schooling.  It struck me that we have an opportunity each day to teach the lesson of good action vs. evil action in school  bullying situations.  Bullying in schools is one of the most prevalent problems facing schools today.  Yet bullying intervention programs have largely failed and it is fair to say, miserably.

And what better laboratory is available to us than the school playground complete with chronic episodes of bullying?

This opportunity to "practice" skills needed to take a stand against bullying is perhaps unequaled as bullying persists within the entire schooling experience from elementary to high school.

One of the most dramatic findings in bullying research is the focus on the bystander as an effective intervention strategy to reduce bullying. On those rare occasions when a witness does object to bullying, there is a good chance that the bullying will stop.  In fact, researchers have reported that bystander objections effectively discourage bullying at least half the time.

Does this sound interesting?  Read this month's Peaceful PlaygroundsŪ Featured Article on Bullying Prevention and find out how savvy administrators are capturing this teachable moment to instruct both victims and bystanders on bully prevention strategies.
