Burning Issue: Playground structures and surfacing
|
Last week a number of early morning shows and news stations across the country reported on the NYC child who experienced second degree burns on his feet from playground mats. Upon testing the heat of playground mats in NYC, one news station reported that they can reach 160 degrees.
For school principals and teachers, the summer heat makes recess a similar threat to student safety. Some schools have installed misters "Playground Heat Solution" in detail. A greater number of schools are installing shade covers over the playstructure area to prevent hot slides or hot sand or surfacing. Check out our blog on "Shade Structure Grants" for information on applying for a grant to fund an outdoor Shade Structure.
Finally, you may want to learn more on the topic "When is it too hot to play?" It is part of our Playground Tips Topics and talks about the symptoms of heat exhaustion, the importance of hydration, and how heat effects children differently than adults.

| Recess on the upswing |
The growing support for daily recess is gaining momentum. Parents, educators, and public health officials are leading the charge to have daily elementary school recess reinstated.
The initial movement was called Rescuing Recess and consisted of a campaign by the National PTA and the Cartoon Network. Their efforts paid off. In all, 15 states have written recommendations or mandates requiring schools to offer daily recess. Read the complete Recess on the Upswing featured article on the Peaceful Playgrounds website to find out how they went about securing support for their successful efforts.

Playgrounds Transforms Schoolyard

The Center for Advanced Learning is a charter school in Los Angeles. Like many urban charter schools they dealt with limited space for a playground. In fact, the playground is a dual purpose parking lot and playground during school hours. Click on the title above to view a video of the before and after shots of a playground in transition.
