Issue: #7 July 2008
Greetings!

This month's newsletter provides information on NPPS's Playground Safety School and a phone symposium on planning for high activity playground activities.
National Playground Safety School
The National Playground Safety School is held annually at NPPS's headquarters in Cedar Falls, IA.  The school this summer will be held from August 4-7.   The following is a brief description of some of the topics covered at the week long school.

Understanding Safe Outdoor Play Environments
Identify the most common playground problems and how to fix them. Recognize potential problems. Learn how to document. Explore which surfaces you should use under and around your equipment. Discover the most important thing you can do to prevent playground injuries.

Planning for Outdoor Play Environments
Apply the elements of S.A.F.E. Look at what you need to know to supervise children on playgrounds. Examine how to make informed decisions about safe playground equipment. Learn how your playground helps promote child development. Discover how easily you can recognize accidents waiting to happen. Examine the features of good playground design.

S.A.F.E. Playground Certification
The National Playground Safety School is offering S.A.F.E. playground certification. Become part of a nationwide network of S.A.F.E. playground educators by completing this course and passing the certifying exam covering S.A.F.E. playgrounds.

Register for the NPPS Summer Playground Safety School or phone 800-554-PLAY (7529) for additional information.
Action for Healthy Kids Phone Symposium

Join Action for Healthy Kids for this summer-themed discussion on the latest trends and research on ways to spice up, and attract more families to your school and community parks and playgrounds.  From fitness zones and nature trails to blacktop games and overcoming barriers to attending park activities, this session will help you learn about resources to provide more opportunities for physical activity.  Jean Wiecha, Senior Research Scientist, Department of Society, Human Development and Health Harvard School of Public Health will discuss her research, Play Across Boston, identifying gaps in resources and barriers to park programs.  Additionally, Melinda Bossenmeyer, Ed.D., from Peaceful Playgrounds will help us get creative with designing exciting low-cost activity stations on playgrounds and in parks.

Registration is required for this phone symposium. Please register by sending an e-mail to StateTeams@ActionForHealthyKids.org.  Call-in information and appropriate materials will be sent via e-mail to registrants on July 22, 2008.

We will post a link to the recorded Symposium on the Peaceful Playgrounds  website on the Peaceful Playgrounds Press Page after the July 22 Symposium.
Non Competitive Play Leads to More Physical Activity in Children

A new study from Pediatrics June 08 found that non-competitive games resulted in more physically active children when compared to competitive games. It seems that most competitive games (included in the study) involved games of elimination which limited participation time. More students reported enjoying participating in games of elimination however.

"This study highlights the importance of quality over quantity in a physical activity sessions for children," Researcher Bruggeman said. "It is important to promote non-elimination games to increase physical activity participation, but also important to monitor levels of enjoyment to foster a healthy, fun environment in youth."
