FESTIVAL OF WHALES NEXT TWO WEEKENDS
|
|
Friday, March 6, 2009
This annual festival of spring takes place at venues throughout Dana Point Harbor over the next two weekends. Believe it or not, this is the 38th year and it just keeps getting bigger and better!
To learn more, here are two links to the official website. (There's way to many fun events for us to list here!)
Hey, if you're strolling on boardwalk near the Coffee Importers (between J & K Docks) please drop by and say hi to the DPBA members, advisers and directors who will there much of the weekend passing out fliers, answering questions and generally having a good time enjoying both the sunshine and the festivities. If you've got a little time to spare, then please hang around awhile and lend a hand. You'll have some fun, learn more about what's going on in the harbor and of course, it'll be much appreciated.

WHAT'S UP WITH OC DANA POINT HARBOR? |
|
During the past few weeks we've continued to meet regularly with Brad Gross and his staff:
1. Parking Task ForceThe Parking Task Force we've talked about previously has (finally) formed, the DPBA Parking Proposal has been distributed and a meeting is scheduled for late this month. There are about ten merchants, City and County officials and other stakeholders who will participate in the effort initially. Steve Carpenter and Rodger Beard are representing DPBA so contact them directly if you have questions. By the way, we could use an additional representative from the trailer boater community. If interested contact Rodger.
2. Market Rate AdjustmentWe are starting to make real progress in analysis and discussions regarding this "every four years" event, upcoming in May. While it's too early yet to say with confidence what the adjustment will be, OC DPH has tentatively agreed that it will be much less than many had feared, and we anticipate less than past years within the East Basin. This is because it also appears likely the entire harbor will be moving to one set of slip rates, based upon relative square footage (with the same rate per square foot used throughout the harbor), rather than having separate linear footage pricing for each basin as is done today. What this all means is that beginning in May, boaters renting slips 40' and under, especially within the East Basin, will be paying somewhat less than they would otherwise.
Brad Gross will be presenting the entire program at our upcoming March 19th general meeting (details in the column to the left). So do make plans now to attend!
3. Waterside vs. Land-side Revenue There's been considerable debate about how much of the Harbor's gross and net revenue, before reserves, comes from the waterside and some boaters are very concerned about future waterside cash flow improperly going to help finance land-side commercial projects. We've been working on this for at least 18 months now and indeed we get a much different answer also. We raised this apparent discrepancy recently to Brad Gross, and he said "OK, let's sit down with the staff and records necessary to figure out what this number really is". We have a two hour meeting scheduled in late March to start doing exactly that. We'll keep you posted...
