TOP DPBA MEMBERS ONLY

February 13, 2009

Fellow DPBA members,

Below are two articles discussing documents published by your association recently that should be of interest.  Please click the links at the top of each article to view.  As always, we'll much appreciate your feedback!

Next is another urgent plea to sign the Boater's petition to the California Coastal Commission. (Have all your friends and family signed up yet?)  It takes only a couple of  minutes max and is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT to all DP boaters!

Last below is formal confirmation of the date and speaker for our March general meeting and a couple interesting asides.

In closing, just a heads up that Board Members Kevin Hendra and Rodger Beard are scheduled to meet with Brad Gross, an OC finance person from Santa Ana and others next Wednesday to talk about the upcoming market rate adjustment on slips.  We're planning to send an email update following.

Wishing everyone the very best in boating,

Your Board of Directors

Boaters' Harbor Redesign Requirements (click to view)

This is a report in letter form that we sent to the Coastal Commission earlier this week.  The cover sheet email said in part:

During our meeting at the CCC offices in Long Beach during December, you asked that DPBA step back and take a fresh look at Dana Point Harbor boating and ocean access requirements from a boaters' perspective.

The suggestion was then that we provide a comprehensive written report, to document all landside and waterside boater requirements at the program level.  Also to note program level conflicts within the Dana Point Harbor LCP Amendment (LCP DPT-MAJ-1-08 ), as currently proposed, which may prevent full realization of these requirements.

During our quarterly general membership meeting a couple weeks ago, you may recall that several members expressed interest in receiving a copy of DPBA's proposal to move the target location of the West Marine store and two story parking structure.  Here it is!

We should add that this went out to the Coastal Commission and the City of Dana Point as well as OC DPH.

After some delay, we've had 3 productive meetings with Brad Gross and his staff since the general membership meeting on January 22nd.  A new task force is being formed with merchants, a couple DPBA board members and others, including two additional boaters, to look at alternatives for mitigating boater takeaways in the existing proposal for the boat launch area.

Please contact Brad Gross (949/923-2236) or Lisa Smith (949/923-3796) right way if you have any interest at all in participating.  If you're a trailer boater, some much the better!

From a boater perspective, there still are some serious issues with the Revitalization Plan.  Plus there are boater takeaways for the sake of commercial development that need to be worked out.

If you haven't already done so, please go online at: http://DanapointBoaters.org/CCCPetition.html, load your contact information and hit the "send" button.  It'll only take a couple minutes and we'll do the rest.

Frankly, this could not be more important right now from a boaters perspective.

Just an early reminder, Brad Gross has agreed to speak at our next General Membership meeting on March 19th.

A note to those who may be concerned about their Association membership being kept private, this meeting will be open to boaters at large, and we will be promoting it heavily to general public as well.  An aside, we've also agreed THE LOG request to have a reporter cover it live.  So the point is, your presence will not be singled out.

Above concerns about privacy addressed, we would be remiss if we did not also add that the bad old days of boater retribution appear to be behind us.  I believe this is one of the benefits of the management change that brought Brad Gross on board in September, 2007.

March General Meeting

As we announced last week, Brad Gross has agreed to speak at our next general meeting.  Arrangements are now locked in.  It will be held on March 19th, at the usual place, St. Edwards Church (Directions Site Map) starting at the usual time, 7:00 PM.

A note to those who may be concerned about their Association membership being kept private, this meeting will also be open to boaters at large, and we will be promoting it heavily to general public as well.  We've also granted THE LOG request to have a reporter cover the event live.  So the point is, your presence will not be singled out unless you decide to identify yourself as a proud member of DPBA.

Given concerns about privacy are being addressed, we still would be remiss if we didn't add that most boaters we've talked to recently believe that the bad old days of boater retribution appear to be behind us now.  Perhaps this is one of the benefits of the management change that brought Brad Gross to our harbor in September, 2007.  Let us know what you think about this.  We always appreciate hearing from you!
