Dear Miss Maintenance, How long is too long to continue using the same tube of mascara?  Mine never seems to run out.  Am I compromising my eyelashes in any way?

Dear Batty:Yours is not an uncommon problem.  Mascara is often the last thing we think of to toss out of our make-up bags.  Unfortunately it should be the first!  Jane Iredale advises us to "replace mascara 3 months after opening to minimize any chance of eye infections."  That dark little tube is an excellent place for bacteria to grow, so when it doubt, throw it out! 

Jane also advises us to check for expiration dates on all make up, never share cosmetics with friends (unless you use a disposable applicator), and clean all make up brushes regularly.  So when you're doing your spring cleaning this month, don't forget your make up bag!
