Greetings!
It's October. The 4th quarter begins! Time to start thinking end of year (or at least until December 21st, when the Mayan disaster takes over). We're pretty much past summer (already??). I'm sure we'll be seeing Christmas ads on TV and in malls within a few weeks.
So let's see, where are we in the NorthEast Ohio scheme of things:
- Browns out to a rip-roaring start of the season: Check
- Indians end season, make Browns look good: Check
- Cavaliers getting started, not sure what with: Check
- Wish both Presidential candidates didn't consider Ohio a must-win state (seriously, can you spend a bit more time in Pennsylvania? Pleeeeeeezzze???): Check
- Microsoft is putting out a new version of Windows just in time for Halloween?: Check
- Apple has a new iPhone out, and it's a hit because...because....: Check
All is well in the world.
Especially over at Hattie's Café, where we had over 35 people attending last month's Lunchinar. And the feedback we received was particularly positive. So you might want to take a look at the YouTube video.
Keep in mind that Microsoft always has "special" deals towards the end of the calendar year. That's especially true when they're introducing new products as well. And Windows 8 certainly qualifies.
So, Trick or Treat...but no feet smelling, please...
Bob

Simplex-IT Invites You to Our Next Free Lunchinar: "Introduction to the New Windows 8!"
The latest Microsoft operating system, Windows 8, has recently been released to manufacturing and will soon be appearing on new computers and retail shelves everywhere.
It's time to get up to speed with what's changed, what's stayed the same, what's better, what's worse and most importantly why you should care. The fact that this will be Microsoft's first OS designed to work with tablets has made interest for its introduction even stronger.

Microsoft Store coming to Beachwood Place!
Bob here. Now, you may have heard about this already. But Microsoft is in the process of opening 30 new "holiday stores" for the...wait for it...holidays. And the only one that will be in Ohio will be in Beachwood, in Beachwood Mall.
Relatively close to the Apple store (like that's an accident). No specific date has been given yet, but since Windows 8 (and the first wave of Windows Tablets, including Microsoft's own Surface) are slated for late October, it's a good guess that you'll be able to spend your Halloween at a Microsoft store!

Bob Speaking at Hudson Chamber of Commerce: Tablets, Windows 8 and Office 2013
Bob here. Yeah, I've been on a bit of a run lately with the whole Windows, Office, tablet thing. But I'm convinced this is pretty important.
The truth is, when you think of tablets and other portable computing devices, you think of iPads, iPhones, Droids...just about everything except Microsoft. Starting in October, this is likely to ...click here for more. |
Office 2013:
Microsoft's Winning Strategy they're Ignoring?
Microsoft has been fighting for years now to make itself more meaningful in today's IT market. The days of the "killer app" upgrade driving folks to purchase new operating systems and new versions of Office are long gone. It's only been over the past year or so that organizations are finally moving off of Windows XP and Office 2003 combinations. And the incredible growth of non-PC devices, i.e., tablets or phones, make the entire PC platform vulnerable to becoming an afterthought.
The combination of Windows 8, Office 2013, SharePoint, SkyDrive and legitimate Windows based tablets make, in my opinion, the best strategy Microsoft has come up with in some time. Unfortunately, again in my opinion, I'm not hearing Microsoft communicating their strategy effectively. Microsoft has always been keen on talking about features. Combinations of PowerPoint presentations and quick demos of this feature or that feature (usually exaggerated) along with the obligatory T-Shirt.

Horror IT Support of the month
True story of the past month. We were talking to a company that works with a customer of ours. One of their switches (thing with blinking lights and fan to keep it cool. Usually located in the server room...critical for stuff to work) started making loud noises. The kind that say "Hey, the fan is starting to beat mercilessly on the inside of this device!"
We suggested they call their IT support. They did.

We're looking for a Network Technician!
Ok, Simplex-IT needs to hire an experienced Network Engineer (it's a full time position). You *must* have experience with Windows Server (preferably 2008 and 2003). Active Directory experience is a must, including Group Policy Management, Desktop support (Windows 7 and XP) absolutely. Network Monitoring? Yup. Exchange is a big plus (as is Office 365), and it would be nice to throw in some SQL and SharePoint as well. You know how to troubleshoot network performance and security issues. You could also install/configure a new AD domain, or upgrade an existing one.
In our environment, working on four projects for four different clients in a given day is called normal.
This is not an entry-level position.

A Preview of Office 2013 - Now Online!
They packed the room! Simplex-IT's Bob Coppedge and Kevin Dutkiewicz discussed the next evolution of Microsoft's ubiquitous Office Suite for 2013 at our very well attended Lunchinar for September 2012. In addition to the product's new features they also emphasized and highlighted the profound changes to the product's platform that are sure to maintain Microsoft's leadership in the industry moving forward.

If you're like most folks we seem to talk to, you want the elections to be over. Yeah, we want our guy to win, but we just want it over.
But if you can't wait, you can always skip up past the border, to our buddies in Canada. The only catch is you need to blend in, right? I mean, eh? And the best way to blend in is to learn...
