Plain Funny #49
Issue: #52August/2012

Greetings!

Bob

Yes, it's August!  Hot August Nights (great album by Neil Diamond, btw).  Guns of August (great book by Barbara Tuchman about the opening days of World War I).  The month where we take summer for granted the first half, and then panic because Labor Day will be here the latter part of the month.  We look out for neighbors running around planting zucchini on unsuspecting neighbors doorsteps (if you read our blog you know what I'm talking about).

And we celebrate 5 years doing business.

According to a recent Dun and Bradstreet report, "small business failure rates have increased by 40% from 2007 to 2010."

Ok, so our timing wasn't the most brilliant.  "Hey, let's start a business right around the time the economy is going to go into a tailspin!  Who's with me?!?!"  But we've made it.  And we want to share that success with you.  I'd truly like to see everybody reading joining us at our 5th Annual Simplex-IT picnic on Wednesday August 15th from 4pm-8pm.   You can RSVP for it by clicking here, or look for the article elsewhere in the eNewsletter.

Throughout the 5 years we've been committed to the idea of we're all in this together.  Whether it be our Lunchinar, our eNewsletter or free training events, we've felt compelled to share our knowledge and experience with whoever could use the help, and worry about the $ later.  So far the strategy seems to be working.

So c'mon down.  We'll make sure we've got a burger for you.

Bob

Simplex-IT Summer Picnic
Actors Reenact 2010's Picnic

Mark your calendars for August 15 from 4:00-8:00pm and join Simplex-IT as we welcome friends, clients, local business owners and fellow Chamber of Commerce members from Hudson, Streetsboro, Cuyahoga Falls and Akron. Once a year in August we forego our regular monthly business-oriented Lunchinar presentation in favor of an open invitation picnic celebration in the back yard of our Worldwide International Headquarters (5225 Darrow Road, Hudson). This year will be no exception.

Microsoft's Free eBook Bonanza!

Bob  here. Ok, we've posted a few notices here and there about Microsoft making some eBooks available at no charge.

And when the "Dog Days of August" come around, we realize it's the one month that doesn't have any major holidays associated with it. Ok, besides August 8th's "National Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Day," of course.

So Microsoft has decided to make available (for those of us not enamored by Zucchini nor neighbors who are themselves enamored by it) a ton of eBooks. For free.

Simplex-IT Lunchinar - "Social Media: Now What?" - Is Now Online!

Simplex-IT's July 2012 Lunchinar is now available for viewing on our YouTube channel. For your convenience, by clicking the thumbnail below you can view it directly in this blog entry.

This was an open panel discussion featuring our own Bob Coppedge, Heather Taylor from the Greater Akron Chamber and Mike Sheehan, Life Insurance professional and Social Media advocate.

Social Media - What Now?
Social Media - What Now?

Ok, this announcement is a little late, but Simplex-IT actually broadcase last month's "Social Media" webcast to an additional 10 or so attendees online using Microsoft Lync.

We'll probably keep that tradition moving forward!  This means that now you can attend our Lunchinars online if you can't make it to Hudson.

Office 2013 The next version of Microsoft Office is here. Mostly. Sort of.

The first openly available version of the new Office, now officially called Office 2013, made its debut earlier this week. Some of the key pieces of information about the new version:

  • You can have both worlds. You can install the Office 2013 Consumer Preview (which is Latin for "Beta") without removing your Office 2010.
  • Click here to see more bullet points!

Office 365 No, that's not a misprint! Microsoft announced in late June their Office 365 suite of cloud services - Hosted Exchange, SharePoint and Lync - is being made available to qualified educational institutions for free! In addition to these cloud services, the entire Office 2010 Professional suite of desktop applications is being made available at a ridiculously low monthly subscription price. It's such a low price in fact, one could argue it is the next best thing to being free!

Read more here.

Bob here. Microsoft announced the versions of their next-generation Windows Server editions (click here for some of the details). Markedly missing was SBS (Small Business Server) edition. Available since NT 4.5 days (in the 90's, you young punks!), SBS was maintained as a low cost alternative, packaging Windows Server, Exchange and possibly SQL in a lower cost package, with simpler management tools and limits on number of client computers that could connect.

But the proliferation of the cloud (which now gets blamed for everything) has made some of those components unnecessary for a company to have on-premise.

Poor HP.  They've had more management changes than the Browns have changed quarterbacks.  And they just seem to be struggling for their corporate identify.

And you might question whether they up on the latest stuff.  Y'know...IT stuff.

Like...um...clouds.
