Plain Funny #48
Issue: #51July/2012

Greetings!

Bob

Calling out around the world! July is here. The Supreme Court (without Diana Ross) made a lot of people Happy/Mad/Confused last week. Once again a week full of "people who disagree with me are doo-doo heads." Good times.

And another frenzy of promotions, pushes and folks taking advantage of the end of Microsoft's fiscal year.

The year's half over and I'm half done. Not all bad, actually. We here at Simplex-IT performed several Office 365 migrations (it's getting easier and easier to do with the various tools available). A couple of SBS migrations to SBS 2011 (ditto).

And we're starting to get ready for our annual picnic in August (the 15th, to be exact). Of course, we're not ignoring our July Lunchinar either. You can see announcements for both events below.

Summer's here, and the time is right...although dancing in the street could be dangerous. Please use extreme caution<g>.

Simplex-IT's Next Free Lunchinar: "Social Media: Now What?"

Ok, you've stuck your foot in the Social Media swimming pool to test the water - you're on Facebook, LinkedIn, maybe even Twitter. Now what? Is that too much? Not enough? What's your next step? How do you decide?

At this month's free Simplex-IT Lunchinar, Bob Coppedge is hosting a roundtable discussion that will examine the next steps, challenges and potential for Social Media as it relates to the Small to Medium Organization. Joining us will be local Social Media advocates and gurus Mike Sheehan and Heather Taylor. Together they will interact with Bob and the audience to discuss the latest trends and Social Media portals like Google+, Pinterest, FourSquare, etc.

Simplex-IT Summer Picnic
Actors Reenact 2010's Picnic

Mark your calendars for August 15 from 4:00-8:00pm and join Simplex-IT as we welcome friends, clients, local business owners and fellow Chamber of Commerce members from Hudson, Streetsboro, Cuyahoga Falls and Akron. Once a year in August we forego our regular monthly business-oriented Lunchinar presentation in favor of an open invitation picnic celebration in the back yard of our Worldwide International Headquarters (5225 Darrow Road, Hudson). This year will be no exception.

Facebook changed your email without notifying you. Imagine that!

Hello, Monica here. Surprise! Facebook has changed your primary email to their Facebook domain account email.  It looks something like your.name@facebook.com. Yes, you weren't notified of this either.

Why should you care? Well, the Plain Dealer, Janet Cho, came up with the why you should care. Basically, if you are used to getting your Facebook interactions through your Yahoo or Gmail account, it's been switched to a Facebook domain account email that you're not checking. Also, your Facebook domain account email is public.

"Simplex-IT: This is What We Do!" is now Online

Simplex-IT's June 2012 lunchinar is somewhat a departure from our regular 'general interest' topics - yes, it's a shameless self-promotion! Join Bob Coppedge as he steps you through the many services we provide our clients. You will learn how it benefits them AND adds value to their information technology.

For those of you who couldn't join us in person you can now join the presentation by clicking on the thumbnail below. Of course, if you have questions as you listen don't hesitate to contact us - by email: John@Simplex-IT.com or by phone: 234.380.1277. We are always happy to help whenever we can!

On Vacation with Your Computer? The FBI Issues a Warning!

You know those "Critical Updates" that pop up occasionally on your computer? The FBI says you should be very, very cautious about them, especially when using hotel Internet connections - or any public WiFi hotspots for that matter.

It turns out these public networks, particularly ones with Open Access, aren't secure, making them perfect for setting up these kind of attacks.

Apple Users: Don't Panic

Bob here. In Douglas Adams' classic book "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy," Earth-born hero Arthur Dent learns that his friend Ford Prefect was going to update the Guide's entry from "harmless" to "mostly harmless." Considering the Earth had been recently destroyed in order to make a Pan-Dimensional bypass (What? You didn't know??), the point seemed rather moot.

Only a slight change, but significant by a certain perspective.

Something similar recently happened, up on the web. CRN recently pointed out that Apple, long known for not worrying about viruses and the like, has toned down its superiority claims against the PC.

Their web site as recent as June 9th said: "It doesn't get PC Viruses" To: "It's built to be safe"

Those two sentences, to me, represent a huge swing in terms of presentation to the audience. In the first you've got a "cross this concern off your list," whereas the second statement is "We're going to try really hard to protect you."

Windows XP SP3 & Office 2003 Support Ends April 8, 2014

Just as the title indicates, Windows XP SP3 and Office 2003 support will be ending in April 2014.

Here at Simplex-IT we aren't into extreme-isms (never in a bazillion years!). "The sky is falling the end is near!" or "If your systems work now there won't be problems in the future" are two messages you won't hear from us. As a business strategy, this support ending situation needs to be on your radar.

What does this mean?  Click here to find out!

Why is My Computer so @#!n' Slow? Now online.

Simplex-IT's May 2012 Lunchinar is now online on our YouTube channel for your viewing enjoyment. Bob Coppedge and Kevin Dutkiewicz discuss the many and varied reasons your computer slows down. We received many positive comments from the attendees who stated they left the presentation with a much greater understanding of what to look for when troubleshooting their systems.

Lync 2010 on Your New Smartphone (mobile!)

Brandon here! So I recently did some digging to get Lync working on the phones of my fellow Simplex colleagues and I thought you all might be able to get something out of this!

So here's the situation. You have your shiny new Android / iPhone / Windows smartphone and your workplace is using Office365 (or if your company has a dedicated Lync server). You want to be connected to your colleagues at all times but it can tend to be difficult. You can always check your email, but maybe you need something faster. If you are at your computer you can start up Microsoft Lync and get connected, but what about when you are out and about?

For those who aren't familiar with Lync, it's a business tool to keep you in contact with your coworkers by syncing your Outlook contacts. It is fully featured to allow instant messaging, screen-sharing, video conferencing, file sharing, and more!

Time to change your LinkedIn Password!

As a 411 and service to our followers, we just learned a supposed Russian hacker has leaked 6.5 million users and passwords from LinkedIn. Of course, there are over 150 million users on LinkedIn. But now would be the wise time to change your LinkedIn Password.

Plain Funny #48

Nobody reinvents their creations like George Lucas. Ok, maybe Apple.  And Microsoft.  And parents who have high hopes for their child, only to have them dashed by the kid deciding that he wants to be a professional miniature golfer when you know, you Know that medical school is the right place for them to be and if it wasn't for that kid down the street filling him full of hopes and dreams about bowling that we know just aren't going to come through because whenever there's a hole that involves a windmill, the kid just chokes and you watch in terror as the windmill seems to come alive and bats every ball from the opening away like a combination of a bad ninja movie and Don Quixote, and every miniature course has a windmill, although sometimes it's disguised like an alien with tentacles but you know and I know and the whole freaking world knows it's a windmill and the kid is going to choke on it.

But I digress.  'Cause George Lucas likes to change his Star Wars movies.  A lot.  And here's why:

'The Star Wars That I Used To Know'

This might make more sense if you saw the original video:
