Plain Funny #43
Issue: #46February/2012

Greetings!

Bob

2012 is now officially underway. Let the countdown to the Mayan disaster begin!

Thankfully, the last two years have provided us a fair amount of growth. So far 2012 seems to be more of the same, for which we're very grateful.

I actually spoke at three events in January. First I had the opportunity to speak at the Northern Ohio SQL User Group about making the transition from a "geek" to a "business guy." There were about 40 or so people there, and it was a fun evening. I am absolutely convinced that one of the best technical skills IT professionals can develop is an understanding of the business processes that they support.

I also had the opportunity to speak briefly at the Cuyahoga Falls Chamber of Commerce meeting. The topic there was "IT Trends in 2012." I actually had to present without the ability of displays (PowerPoint withdrawal!), but the presentation seemed to be well received by the 60 or so people in attendance.

And then of course there was our monthly luncheon or, which also dealt with IT trends for the coming year. And there we had about 20 or so people.

All three topics were about embracing change. In one case the change embraced was personal change. The other two dealt with changes in our environment. Specifically our professional environment.

This is a welcome change to many of the topics that seem to be of interest to people in prior years, namely "how do I get a job?" While I make no claims to be an economics expert, I can't help but notice that for many companies (and most of our customers, it seems), there is some level of recovery underway.

In January, for example, we achieved our monthly growth goals by the end of the first week in terms of new customers with ongoing support agreements. We're certainly happy to see that.

And we're expanding in order to properly support that growth. Elsewhere in this newsletter you'll notice that we are adding a new position, namely that of "Office Manager." In the 4 1/2 years or so since I started Simplex-IT, I have been the chief cook and bottle washer, bookkeeper and all pieces-parts in between. This position will allow me to focus more specifically on the growth of the organization and the services to our existing customers.

We've also added for two days each week a new intern position, handled quite well by Brandon King. Brandon, a student at Akron University, started in early January and is already proved himself quite valuable for the organization. He is one sharp kid.

On a personal note (at the risk of being self-indulgent), I'm pleased to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the improvisational comedy group that I'm director of, the "Point of No Return" players. Over the past 10 years I've had the pleasure of directing well over 30 people with extremely varied experience in improvisational comedy (I'm actually a graduate of Second City, for those who didn't know). February 18 marks our 10th anniversary show. Click here to see our Facebook page for more information.

Good stuff.

February 2012 Free Lunchinar: The Magic of Unified Communications - Microsoft Lync and Office 365

Today's workers are ALL mobile, whether they are on the road or not; a recent study found the average employee was at his or her desk only 40% of the time. Yet most companies' communications infrastructure is designed for a deskbound workforce. Happily there IS a better way!

During Simplex-IT's next free lunchinar, you will learn about Microsoft Lync, an often under-appreciated component of Office 365. Offering secure instant messaging, Internet-based voice, video conferencing, collaborative whiteboarding, presence and seamless document sharing on almost any device, Lync is transforming business productivity.

Simplex-IT is growing again!

Bob here. In 2007, Simplex-IT was started with two employees. At this point, we currently have five full-time employees and four part-time employees. An unstated goal of ours has always been a high ratio of folks providing service (the technical folks) versus the sales and support people.

So it's taken me a while to get comfortable with adding a support position to the organization. To date I've taken personal responsibility for billing, reporting, trying to maintain project timelines, vendor relationships, payables and the like. So far, so good.

But I can tell that's not going to last for long, therefore I'm creating a new position within the organization. Tentatively titled "Office Manager," this position is still somewhat under construction. However at the least it will have the following responsibilities:

  • customer billing
  • accounts payables
  • Accounts Receivable
  • verify technicians schedules and ticketing

Salary is commensurate with experience (whatever the heck that means). The ideal candidate needs to be able to work with a wide variety of people, must have attention to detail, and be able to work on many projects daily. In addition, basic computer skills including Microsoft Office are a necessity. This position is neither a gopher nor a secretary but a critical piece of this organization.

If you're interested, send me a resume along with salary requirements to Bob@simplex-IT.com.

Bob Coppedge Predicts the Future at First Lunchinar of 2012!

Simplex-IT successfully hosted its first free Lunchinar of 2012 with approximately 20 business owners, executives and IT professionals in attendance.

President and Chief Technical Guru Bob Coppedge entertained the group with his prognostications of IT Trends we can expect to see in the coming year. The Cloud, the differences between backups and business continuity and Microsoft's planned new product offerings for 2012.

BlackBerry Cloud Service for Office 365 Now Available

On January 30, 2012, Research in Motion announced the general availability of free cloud services for using and managing BlackBerry devices with the Microsoft Office 365 suite.

A similar BlackBerry service for Office 365's precursor, the Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS), originally cost users $10. But RIM made the service free for BPOS a year ago and committed to making an Office 365 version free, as well, when it shipped. It now looks like that is Mission Accomplished!

The Story of the Ribbon

One of the questions I hear frequently from users of Office is "Why did Microsoft switch from the familiar Menu-based interface in Office 2003 and earlier to the new Ribbon User Interface in Office 2007/2010?" Well, the short answer is the Ribbon is intended to be easier to use - with fewer clicks to accomplish frequent tasks.

For some, whether Microsoft met their goal remains open to debate.

But, for me, I was curious as to how they actually arrived at and ultimately decided upon the Ribbon configuration.

Star Wars Uncut?!

Y'know what would be cool?  If a bunch of people, most of who knew absolutely nothing about making movies, each made pieces of the original Star Wars movie.  Like 15 seconds worth.

And then somebody put them all together and remade the movie.  The whole movie.

And some of the parts are...ummm...better than the others...

(but my question is...in this version, who shoots first?)
