Greetings!
Thankful. It's a word that's used a lot, usually to indicate gratitude that something happened ("I'm just thankful <fill in the blank> is running!") or didn't happen ("I'm just thankful that Donald Trump isn't running!"). And it's often a knock-off, simply used to add a little clarity to how we value our status.
Fortunately or unfortunately, get ready to hear a lot of the word "Thankful" in November. I mean, c'mon. It's a tradition.
Be thankful you don't live in Thailand. You might think the flooding is another far-removed disaster, and you'd be right (although how far removed when thousands of folks lose their lives?). Be thankful you're not there. Kinda puts my being annoyed at traffic in perspective, no?
And don't be surprised to see delays on hardware orders, especially hard drives, over the next few months. Thailand manufactures a lot of components for hard drives and the like. Some hardware providers are already warning their partners and customers of upcoming shortages.
We're finally deploying some of the new Small Business Server Essential 2011 servers. HP's released a small server for around $1,000 that includes hardware AND server OS AND all the licensing for a small network. We're deploying our first next week...we'll keep you updated on how that goes.
And boy, have we dived into SANs and the performance they offer! In the past few months we (ok, mostly Doug Tombow) have worked with several companies trying to get the most bang for the buck out of their network storage. We're thinking of doing a Lunchinar on SANs. Let me know if that's a topic that would interest you.
Over the past couple of months we tried a new angle on the eNewsletter: a contest. The first month was a great success (almost 30 responses). So we tried it again. Dud. 7 responses (lucky Steve!). Sooo, lesson learned. We'll do the contest again, but not every month.
I'm looking forward to the Lunchinar this month. Lots of folks talk about disaster recovery, business continuity and the like. But we're going to talk about the different types of disasters, from the small "I deleted a file" to an asteroid hitting the Earth, and discuss different solutions. Should be fun.
I'm actually writing this on Tuesday morning, the 1st of November. Just last night we were giving out candy to the kids in the neighborhood. At the same time our daughters were taking the 3 grandkids out trick or treating after having some pizza.
Some nice things to be thankful for there, I'd say.
Bob
