Greetings!

Soooooo....got any good earthquake stories? Know anyone in Vermont?
Just once throughout the hurricane love-fest that the news channels kept giving us, I would have loved to have one of the anchors go:
Anchor: "And now to our 14th weather guy reporting on the hurricane, Ralph. Ralph, how's it look to you?"
Ralph: "Today, I'm reporting from Iowa. Yup, Iowa. Pleasant weather, no hurricane, no trauma, no earthquakes. Just Iowa."
I mean, if one of the weather guys would have been blown over, I assume a domino effect would immediately ensue.
Ah, well.
But closer to home, it's getting interesting. The Browns' season is about to start. We haven't started talking about Next Year (yet), and perhaps we have a quarterback. More importantly we seem to be only talking about one quarterback.
And we're busy, as we just plain seem to be. A lot of SAN work (optimizing/evaluating performance, especially for SQL). A couple of Exchange migrations getting started, and of course more cloud work through Office 365.
But here's something we're going to try for the eNewsletter specifically. I want to try something to see who's actually reading our eNewsletter.
Here's the deal. I have a $50 Amazon gift certificate.
I will randomly pick the winner out of the first 5 people who email me (at Bob@Simplex-IT.com) the correct answer to the following 3 questions:
1> What is the most frequently used command in Windows Explorer?
2> Where did we first hear about the Office 365 eBook?
3> Why did the kittens stop their Light Saber battle?
The answers can be found somewhere in this issue (you may have to click to the complete article to find the answer).
Btw, this months speaker (Tim Dimoff) at our monthly Lunchinar should be great!

Windows 8 gets an improved Explorer Ribbon
Steve here,
I recently ran across a blog post by Microsoft outlining the new improvements to windows explorer inside Windows 8 scheduled to come out this time next year. Looks like Microsoft gathered lots of data over the past few years on which functions and buttons are used most often by users and incorporated that information to come up with the new version. Below is a chart showing the functions that were used by most users:

4th Annual Simplex-IT's Picnic a Sizzling Success
Perfect weather and a great turnout combined to make Simplex-IT's 4th Annual Community Appreciation Picnic this past Wednesday, August 17, 2011 a resounding success. With nearly 70 attendees over the 4-hour duration there was plenty of discussion and lots of networking that took place.
There were the usual suspects: folks from the Streetsboro, Hudson and Greater Akron Chambers were in attendance as were IT professionals from the Greater Cleveland PC Users Group (GCPCUG). Several associates who are 'in transition' and various Simplex-IT clients rounded out the guest roster.
Chef Steve manned the grill most of the afternoon (I don't know how Bob's wife, Julie, talked him into it!) and he managed to keep the hot food coming to meet the demand.

Free eBook from Microsoft about Office 365
Bob here. I first saw this reported by Benoit Hamet on his Blog, but immediately wanted to pass it on to you folks. Microsoft often publishes pretty decent eBooks on their latest technologies, and then does a very poor job of getting that information out to the general public.
Well, they've done it again. This time it's about Office 365. The e-book, entitled "Microsoft Office 365: Connect and Collaborate Virtually Anywhere, Anytime" was recently made available. Like previous offerings about Office 2010, BPOS, SQL 2008 R2, and others it's a decent book, and hey... It's free.

Tim Dimoff to Speak on Social Networks: Policies, Procedures and Pitfalls!
Founder and President of SACS Consulting & Investigative Services, Inc. Tim is considered one of the nation's leading authorities in high-risk workplace and human resource issues, security, vulnerability assessments and crime (click here for Mr. Dimoff's full bio). Simplex-IT is pleased to announce that Tim will be our guest speaker at our next Lunchinar on the topic of Social Networks: Policies, Procedures and Pitfalls this coming Wednesday, September 21, 2011 from 11:30am-1:00pm at Hattie's Café, 164 N. Main Street in Hudson.
The explosive growth of online social networks has altered the way people communicate, share ideas, and disseminate information, but with it comes certain risks. The lines between professional and private lives continue to blur, and while these communication tools create great opportunities, they also create ethical dilemmas and challenges for businesses.

Office 365 on your HP TouchPad
Bob here. I'm not one to resist a bargain. Ok, actually I am, but not in this case. When I heard that HP was discontinuing production of their TouchPad line of tablets (click here for details) after only 7 or so weeks on market, I leapt into action. Ok, actually, I did nothing. But when I heard that HP was selling them for around $100 apiece (down from about $500), ok, now that got my attention.
Yesterday, my TouchPad appeared. The first thing, of course, was get it connected to Office 365. And that's what this blog entry is about. Keep in mind that the TouchPad is based on the webOS, both of which were given HP buh-bye. But connecting to Office 365's email is pretty simple. You go through these steps:

Kevin here, while I do not post much, I do try to post things I think are useful to people. To that extent, I developed a tool in PowerShell that will load IP profiles (IP address, Subnet Mask, Gateway etc) based on information stored in a .csv. You can then apply the profiles to a network card of your choosing. I knew I wanted to play with PowerShell as it's the way Microsoft is going for system administration, and I recently worked someplace where I was *constantly* changing my IP to static values. This tool is a product of my learning and annoyance. You are more than welcome to look at the code and laugh, it is by far not the best out there, but it works. As I create more I'll post them here!

Simplex-IT LiveMeeting about Marketing is now...um...Live
Bob here. Y'know, here at Simplex-IT, we've had a pretty successful track record with our marketing. For those of you keeping track, you may recall that back in May we held a Live Meeting event where we described our strategies for marketing to over 50 other IT Managed Service Providers (from as far away as New Zealand and France). Since then, we've had several requests for copies of that meeting.
The only conclusion we can come to is that there are a lot of Managed Service Providers who need assistance getting their daily sleep.
Well, wait no longer! We have now posted the entire Live Meeting content into one long YouTube video. Yep, one hour and forty seven minutes of Bob talking endlessly about Simplex-IT and marketing.

| Plain Funny #36 (and 37!) | |
Ok, if this first video was longer, there'd be no need to have a second. Four words: "Kittens and Light Sabers."
Sells itself, doesn't it? Click here for the (alas) brief video inspired by those four words.
So we needed more. And we turn to the folks at "How it Should Have Ended" for their view on the more appropriate ending for the last Harry Potter movie.
