Greetings!
Ok, before anything else...I gotta ask. Did you fall (at least a little bit) for our April Fool's article last month? If you missed it, click here.
I don't know how many people fell for it, but a quick check showed about 250 or so people looked at it.
The original idea called for a YouTube video, couple of faked blimp shots, the whole nine yards.
Then I remembered something critical: I'm lazy. And so, just the article.
Thankfully, Simplex-IT as a whole wasn't terribly lazy in April. 8 new Blog articles! Plus, 3 new customers joined Simplex-IT's SiMS program. A couple other companies are in the process of migrating their email over to Microsoft's BPOS. And we're in the process of helping another couple of companies verify their SQL arrangements.
While I was finishing this up, I saw (online, of course) the headline that Osama was killed. Kinda puts the rest of this silliness in perspective. Folks...for one day...just one...let's all just be Americans on this one? Bob |

Microsoft extends (again) BPOS Signup reward!
Bob here.
Extended now through May 31st, 2011 Microsoft is offering an incentive to new subscribers of their Business Productivity Online Services (BPOS) that is quite compelling. If your organization has been considering moving to the cloud for Hosted Exchange email, SharePoint Online, Live Meeting or Office Communications, you definitely want to listen to this.
Here's how the promotion works:
For every seat for which a new BPOS client signs up Microsoft will issue a check payable to the Partner assisting in the implementation (that would be us) for a percentage of the first annual subscription fee, up to a total of $1,500! Wow!

Microsoft Licensing...how important is timing?
Bob here.
Those of us who have used Microsoft software before are numerous. Those of us who've been involved in Microsoft's licensing before are equally numerous, however, with few exceptions, they require some form of counseling and possibly pharmaceuticals.
Take Microsoft Office, for example. You would think that the question would simply be "what is the easiest way that my company can actually purchase and legally use the software?" Sorry, friends and neighbors, it's tougher than that. OEM software, retail software, Open License, Open Value, Open Value subscription, Office 365, Office Web apps, Office with Lemon (okay, I'm making that one up).
You get the idea.
It's fairly routine for us, when working with a new customer, to discover that they have several versions of Office throughout their organization. We refer to these situations as "geological digs." What ends up happening in these environments is you have people throughout the organization each with their own user experience and user environment. Some might be able to use the new Office document formats, some might only be able to use the new formats, some wouldn't understand the new format if it bit them in the nose.

The Great IT Debate about the Cloud
Bob here.
The cloud is everywhere. You can't look talk geek at all without bringing it up. And of course, IT companies are changing their message to include the cloud in some way or form. This is a fun debate. Just like all the other ones IT service providers go through about every three years. And like always, there are pitfalls that we have to keep ourselves from falling into.
1> "Everybody's going to do it." The view that before long, all companies will be using XXX technology, it's just so much (insert descriptive, over-the-top emotionally driven term here usually reserved for that girl you met at the bar around 1:45am when you had a couple too many, and it just seemed so right at the time even though the next day she'll barely even acknowledge that you live on the same planet, because...um...never mind...you get the idea).

Caution when purchasing new large hard drives!
We're starting to see new drives breaking the 2TB limit become available. These drives use larger sector sizes to increase storage efficiency. (Great technical explanation here: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2888.
However, not all applications support this. Microsoft has limited support it on their operating systems and I've personally found it not work with Windows Backup and certain portions of Hyper-V: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2510009.
Verify with your application vendor if native 4K , "Advanced format" 4K sectors or emulated 512b sectors is supported by your software! |
Simplex-IT's April Lunchinar on "Data" Successfully Delivers!
Once again information professionals and business owners in northeast Ohio gathered at Hattie's Café in Hudson to hear Bob Coppedge and Doug Tombow talk about the many ways we use data in our businesses and how we might be able to get more out of it. The discussion touched on several topics - the difference between data and information, SQL, the importance of backups, Access, Excel and Pivot Tables, among others.
The Simplex-IT free monthly Lunchinars continue to grow in popularity with the local business and IT community. If you would like to be updated as to the date, times and subject matter of our next event all you need to do is add your name to our eNewsletter. Bob's getting lazier with Dragon Naturally Speaking!
Bob here.
Okay, I admit it. I'm old, and getting older.
I'm already lazy. That's nothing new but I'm finding myself more and more interested in trying new things, such as voice recognition. So I recently installed Dragon software, which is supposed to allow me to do voice dictation into my computer. In fact, this is my first attempt at doing just that.
Honestly, so far so good. I'm not going to make any corrections to this entry or whatever the computer thinks I say, that's what I'm going with. Now, I've tried some other voice recognition software in the past, with usually dismal results.
