Planning for Long Term Care: Plans that Pay Off

ltc planningWhether your looking for information for a loved one or yourself, it is never too early to plan for the future. It's important to know what long- term care is and how it pertains to you personally. There are tons of services and resources in your area alone. A better understanding of long-term care will help you to know which ones best serve your needs.

Long-term care (LTC) is a range of services and supports you may need to meet your health or personal needs over a long period of time.

In 2008, about 70 percent of people over the age of 65 required some type of long-term care services. Since there's a good chance that you or a loved one might need long-term care services at some point, it's imperative that you research your options and plan ahead!

Understanding the different types of long-term care can help you choose the most appropriate services for you or your loved one.

  • Home Care
  • Day Programs
  • Senior Housing
  • Assisted Living
  • Nursing Homes
  • Retirement Communities

You should consider these tips when discussing log-term care:

  • Plan Ahead
  • Talk about long-term care as much as possible
  • Listen to your loved ones preferences and concerns
  • Involve family members and friends

The idea of leaving home or recieving in-home help for everyday activities can be extremely stressful. The more you educate yourself about the options you have, the better decision you'll be able to make.

How to Choose the Best Home Care Agency for your Loved One
red house logo

You wouldn't refer someone to a podiatrist if they need cardiac care and you shouldn't choose just any agency for your specific needs.

When it comes to home health care for a member of your family, you question everything. Will my loved one be well cared for and their quality of life be maintained in a safe, affordable and convenient manner?

Checklist for choosing a Home Care Agency:

  1. Needs- Does the agency provide the services that your needs require?
  2. Hands-on- How much hands on care is needed vs. companion care?
  3. Transportation- Do you need a caregiver that will escort you to appointments?
  4. Memory Loss- Have you been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or other cognitive impairments?
  5. Language- Do you require the caregiver to speak a different language?
  6. Hours- How many hours of care do you require?
  7. Dietary- Are there any special cooking requirements?
  8. Additional Skills- Are there any "skilled" requirements such as taking blood pressure or blood sugar testing, wound care or a feeding tube?
  9. Medication Management- What is the care recipients method for managing medication and can it be improved upon?
  10. Care Management- Will care management be required?

Carefully selecting Medical Professionals can provide you with quality care and peace of mind.

       Testimonials

ElderCare at Home has an impeccable reputation caring for patients with an Alzheimer's/dementia diagnosis and helping their families each step of the way. We pride ourselves on our incredible ElderCare Specialists and work diligently to recommend just the right person to meet our elder client's needs.

Here's what they have to say about ElderCare at Home:

August 2011

It has been about four months since Juanita began caring for my aunt. I just wanted to say that we are very pleased with the services Juanita has provided. Not only has she carried out routine responsibilities extremely well, she has also gone above and beyond expectations on several occasions. Of particular importance to family members is Juanita's initiative in alerting us about negative situations that can be avoided. And her willingness to speak with me, any time I have a question or concern, is greatly appreciated.

Juanita keeps a personal notebook where she carefully records any side effects my aunt may experience due to the medication she is taking so she can explain them more clearly to doctor. When my aunt's washing machine failed beyond repair, Juanita helped her shop for a new one and coordinated the arrangements to have the new machine installed.

Overall, I would say that Juanita is a very caring person who always puts her clients first. She takes her responsibilities very seriously and performs her duties accordingly. She has built a relationship of trust and respect with my aunt so, in result, she believes Juanita is her friend. The other day my aunt told me, "For the first time, in a long time, I feel as if I have some control over my life again."

Thank you Cindy, for selecting the right caregiver to help care for my aunt. We are grateful for the peace of mind Juanita brings to the whole family.

Kimberly Crockett has been a Home Health Aide at ElderCare at Home since August 2011. Although Kimberly has only worked for two months at ElderCare, she has already proven herself as an important role in the ElderCare team.

In the two short months she's been with ElderCare, Kimberly has filled in for three cases at a moments notice. Each with outstanding reviews from the family members of the clients she's worked with. She is loved by all her patients and considers them to be her friends. Ms. Crockett has proven herself to be accountable, punctual and an above all, an excellent caregiver.
