Fall Prevention: Watch Your Step!

falling signDid you know, almost one-third of all people over the age of 65 will fall at least once this year? And two-thirds of elderly people, who have already experienced a fall, are likely to fall again within six months. A fall could possibly put a senior at risk of serious injury. As we continue to age, our physical conditions and health changes, making falls more likely to occur. Fall prevention may seem like a trivial topic, but it's actually very important to be aware of. In fact, falls are the number one source of injury among the elderly.

In the spirit of the upcoming fall season, ElderCare at Home encourages you to become more aware of "Fall Prevention". Taking measures to ensure safety at all times can help to prevent injuries, and it can help people with Alzheimer's or other cognitive impairments to feel relaxed and less overwhelmed. Use additional precautions when, in and around areas such as restrooms, kitchens and especially stairways. Do your part in keeping your loved ones safe and participate in "Fall Prevention".

                  Safety in the Home
red house logoSafety is important for everyone, but individuals with Alzheimer's disease or Dementia and their caregivers need to take particular precautions when it comes to creating a safe environment. Evaluate your surroundings for any potiential dangers and change them to meet the individuals needs. As Alzheimer's disease progresses, the person's abilities will change, but it's not difficult to adapt the home to support these changes with some flexibility and problem solving.

Here's a few things to consider when improving your home safety:

  • Evaluate your Environment
  • Beware of Dangerous Objects and Substances
  • Adjust to Vision Limitations
  • Remove Throw Rugs
  • Display Emergency Phone Numbers
  • Keep Medications Securely Locked Away
  • Avoid Clutter

ElderCare at Home CNA Spotlight

Peggy SolomonPeggy Solomon

Peggy Solomon has been a CNA at ElderCare at Home since March 2004. She has been providing services to one of our patients since March 2004 and provides her with exceptional care. That's over six years of dedicated assistance to her patient! It was obvious, from the beginning, that they were a perfect fit for eachother.

Peggy continuously remains dedicated to the care her patient needs despite some difficult circumstances. They have gone through plenty together. Peggy's husband and her patient's husband were both quite sick at the same time and, unfortunately, they both passed away within days of each other. They went through that ordeal together and are very closely bonded due to the circumstance. "Peggy is part of my family; our relationship is incomparable" says her patient. "She is more than an aide; she has been a companion and my best friend". She is always professional and helped her family cope during stressful times. ElderCare at Home is very proud to have her on our team!
