Home care services have exploded in growth across this country over the past ten years. Every day thousands of home care aides make visits to clients ranging from a few hours a day to round-the-clock care.
While professional services can never replace the care and emotional support of loved ones, home care services can complement daily in-home care practices and enhance the quality of life for clients and their caregivers.

Summer Time Tips | | |

The pleasures of summer include longer, warmer and sunnier days, celebrations with family and friends, and backyard BBQs. For the person caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's disease, summer can also bring with it additional safety challenges. By taking a few minutes to review the following safety tips, families can enjoy a fulfilling and pleasant summertime together.
Sunshine and Warm Weather
- Exposure to the Sun - Limit your loved one's exposure to the sun. Place comfortable lawn chairs in shaded areas. Encourage her to stay indoors between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. when the suns rays are the strongest. Encourage your loved one to wear a hat and sunglasses to protect her eyes.
- Sunscreen - Remind your loved one with Alzheimer's disease to apply and reapply sunscreen when outside for long periods of time. Spray-on sunscreens are now available and may make application quicker and easier.
- Hydration - During the summer heat it is especially important to drink lots of fluids. Offer the person with Alzheimer's disease a small glass of water to drink hourly, or keep a cool glass of water within arm's reach as a reminder to him to drink. Provide non-alcoholic beer or lemonade for backyard BBQs.

A Daughters Dilemma | | |
Two months ago, ElderCare at Home received a panic-stricken call from an adult child concerned that her father had just been admitted to the hospital having suffered a heart attack. His daughter explained that she worked days and was guilt ridden over the fact that her father was alone all day in the hospital.
To complicate matters, her father suffered from early stage dementia and the hospital staff was forced to watch him constantly to make sure he did not pull out his IV and attempt to leave. She desperately needed an extra pair of eyes, peace of mind, and someone with a friendly smile and warm heart to sit with her father during the day.
ElderCare at Home referred two such individuals to her. One to provide care during the day, and one watch over her father at night. Within a week her father was in better spirits, had begun to regain his strength and the life skills that he had prior to his heart attack.
This is a good example of an adult child recognizing the value of a restful night's sleep and gaining some peace of mind. When her father was discharged from the hospital, she decided to continue with ElderCare at Home's services, implementing 24 hour live-in care.
Her father continues to improve and charms his caregivers. (Most recently, his aide had to chase him in the grocery store while he was happily riding up and down the aisles in the electric shopping cart).
ElderCare at Home prides ourselves on the fact that we are able to provide those services necessary to keep our patients at home for as long as it financially and physically possible and to provide our caregivers with the comfort and peace of mind they so desperately need.
We offers a wide variety of programs to meet the individual needs of each and every one of our patients. For more information call us at 800-209-4342.
