AIA Pennsylvania Office LEED Certified

AIA Pennsylvania is proud to announce that our new offices have received LEED certification from the US Green Building Council. Our new offices achieved 22 points and met the qualifications for LEED CI. This is the first LEED CI project in downtown Harrisburg. Thank you to Murphy & Dittenhafer Architects for designing the space and overseeing the LEED certification process. Thank you, also to our Facilities Task Force, chaired by Elmer B. Burger, II, AIA, for overseeing the project as a whole. AIA Pennsylvania's offices are directly across from the Pennsylvania State Capitol, and have enhanced the visibility of the Institute to state lawmakers. Sustainable design is a high priority for AIA Pennsylvania, so the LEED certification of our own offices is an important symbol of our commitment. |
Pennsylvania Architects PAC
Breakfast of Champions
The Pennsylvania Architects PAC held another successful Breakfast of Champions event. The event honoring The Honorable Tommy Tomlinson (R-6th, Bucks County) was held on Monday, October 4, 2010, at the Center for Architecture in Philadelphia. Members of the AIA Bucks County and AIA Philadelphia chapters took the lead in organizing the event.
Senator Tomlinson is Chairman of the Senate Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure Committee, which works to protect the rights of Pennsylvania consumers and ensures that individuals in regulated professions (including architects) adhere to the highest standards. Senator Tomlinson is very important in our efforts to protect and enhance the practice of architecture in the Commonwealth.
The Pennsylvania Architects PAC continues to advocate on behalf of the architecture profession by hosting Breakfast of Champions events. The Breakfast of Champions event is used as a tool to develop relationships with legislators at the grassroots level. Contributors to the PA PAC at levels of $250 and higher can attend a Breakfast of Champions event. |
Architects Day on the Hill:
On September 21, 60 architects from across the Commonwealth lobbied on behalf of the profession in Harrisburg. To get prepared for their visits with legislators, we heard from former Lieutenant Governor, Mark Singel, and State Representative Matt Smith (D-42). Singel spoke about the importance of lobbying on behalf of the profession. He also briefed the attendees about what was happening politically in the Capitol. Rep. Smith focused his remarks on HB444 (State Funded Green Buildings). This was one of the issues that architects lobbied on that day. The House of Representatives honored AIA Pennsylvania and Architects Day with a Citation sponsored by State Representative John Evans (R-5). Joining Rep. Evans on the floor of the house were A. Stevens Krug, AIA (2010 President); William J. Bates, AIA (2011 President); Paula R. Maynes, AIA (Government Affairs Committee Chair); and Gary Matczak, AIA (2010 Treasurer).

In between appointments, back at AIA Pennsylvania's offices attendees were able to meet with key State officials about state funding and programs, including Michael Walsh, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Education and Matthew Karnell, Director of the Commonwealth Finance Authority Programs Division. Bill Fontana, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Downtown Center also spoke about the status of the Main Street, Elm Street and Enterprise Zone Programs. The day concluded back in the Capitol Rotunda for the awards presentation and reception. 150 people attend the presentation of the Special Awards and Architectural Excellence Awards (link to award winners). We were honored to be joined by Phillip Enquist, FAIA, of SOM in Chicago who served as this year's jury chair. Stephen L. Quick, AIA chaired the awards event. Save the Date: Architects Day 2011 is April 12. |
